Description
N0Mode1.) R. H. AVERY.
GULTIVATOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT H. AVERY, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IE AVERY i PLANTER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CU LTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 407,766, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed March 6, 1889. Serial No. 302,174. (No model.)
To @ZZ whomV it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT I-I. AVERY, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the parts shown. Fig. 3 is a detail, being a perspective view of the shovelblock. Fig. i is a section at line 4 4 of Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4L are enlarged.
The objects of this invention are to provide an improved device for attaching the shovelstandard to the beam of a cultivator, so that the angle of the shovel can be adjusted, and to provide an improved device for attaching the shovel to the standard, so that it can be adjusted both vertically and laterally, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, represents a beam of a cultivator.
B is a shovel support or standard. The upper end of this shovel support or standard B is bifurcated, as shown in Fig. 2, and its lower end is round, as shown in Figs. l and 4. Pivoted to the upper end of the standard B on a pivot l) is a metal part or arm C, which may consist of two pieces riveted or bolted together, as shown at o, or of a single piece cast in the form shown.
c is a slot in the upper portion of each piece of the part or arm C, the opposite piece of the part or arm C being similar to the one shown in Fig. 1. This part or arln C is secured to the beam A by a bolt CZ, which passes through the slots c.
The angle of the standard B and the shovel attached thereto can be adjusted by loosening the bolt d and moving the upper end of the piece C forward or back, as may be neeessary, the slots c permitting the desired adjustment. By making the pivot b of wood it serves also as a safety break-pin.
D is a shovel-block, which is provided with an ear e on each side, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4L. This block D is adjust-ably secured to the round part of the standard B by a curved bolt or clip f, as shown in Figs. l and 4, the ends of which are secured in the ears e ot' the block D.
E is a shovel, which is bolted or riveted to the ears g on the shovel-block D.
By making the lower end ot the shovel support or standard B round and attaching the shovel-block D thereto by a curved bolt or clip f, the block is irmly held in place; but by loosening the clip the block can be adj usted vertically on the standard B, or it can be turned to adjust the shovel laterally.
-What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a cultivator-beam, of a standard pivoted to the beam, and a top piece, as C, pivoted to the upper end of the standard and adj ustably secured to the beam, substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
2. In a cultivator, the combination of a shovel-block D, having ears e, a standard B, and a curved bolt or clip j", passing around the standard B, and having its ends secured in the ears e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ROBERT H. AVERY.
