IMPROVEMENT IN CORNAND COTTON CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,64] dated July 13, 1869.

To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, R.. F. PATTON, of Quincy, in the county of Logan, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oorn and Cotton Gultivators, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same, with a portion of the handle broken away, on the line a0 w of Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 represent it side elevation and top view of the harrowiars.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the gures.

My invention consists in the construction of the shovel and harrow bars, and in the devices employed for attaching the same to the frame, so as to allow of their adjustment to a greater or less angle from each other, and also to lallow the point of said angle to be at the front or rear, as may be desired.

It further consists in the manner of attaching the handles to the beam, and in the means employed for rendering the rear ends of said handles adjustable vertically.

In the annexed drawing, A represents the draft-beam, having secured, toward the rear end thereof, at a ri glit angle to the same, a cross-bar, B. C C represent two bars of iron, to which are attached the cultivator teeth or shovels D D, Src., by means of a bolt upon the upper end, which passes through a correspondin g opening in the bar, and is provided with a nut, d, upon its end. The bars O O are pivoted at their center to the cross-bar B by means of a bolt, D', passing through suitable openings in said bar, the opening in the crossbar B being slotted or lengthened, so as to give the bolt and cultivator-bar some lateral motion.

Each end of the cultivator-bar has a slot, c, which corresponds with an eye, a., secured to the draft-beam, when the end of said cultivator-bar is placed against said draft-beam, in which position said bar and beam may be secured together by means of a pin passing through said slot and eye.

This construction permits either end of the cultivator-bars to be secured. to the beam, so as to present either' the point or open end of the cultivator to the front, as may be desired, and, when so arranged, permits the lateral adjustment of said bars, so as to cause them to stand at a greater or less angle to the line of draft.

An additional set of bars, E E, provided with harrow-teeth, is made interchangeable with the cultivator-bars, by means of which the cultivator can in a few minutes be converted into a harrow.

' F F represent two handles, which are pivoted at their forward ends to the draftbeam, so as to have a vertical motion. A cross bar or brace, f, attached to and connecting said handles midway between their en ds, passes through a slotted quadrant, Gr, to which it is secured, for the purpose of retaining the handles in position, by means of a set-screw, g, passing through a slot in the periphery of said quadrant, and screwing into said crossbar.

When thus constructed, the cultivator or harrow bars can be so arranged as to form an obtuse or a sharp angle, as may be desired, so as to cover more or less space laterally, and the point of such angle may be at either front or rear; or said bars maybe arranged parallel to each other by securing the front end of one and the rear end of the other to the draftbeam, in which position they will still stand at an angle to the line of draft.

If desired, a double-shovel plow may be formed by removing the cultivator or harrow bars and securing to the cross-bar in place thereof single shovels.

It is believed that this device possesses man y advantages over any in use intended for a like purpose, furnishing not only two heretofore separate and distinct implements in one, but also enabling such implements to be changed at will, so as to conform in shape to several of the most approved styles of cultivatcrs and harrows now in use.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The draft -beain A, provided with the lugs or eyes a a, Ste., both in front and in rear, :in combination with the cross-bar B, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

2. Also, the cultivator or harrouT bars C C and E E, when so constructed as to permit of their being pivoted at their center to the crossbar B, and attached at either end to the eyes or lugs a a, Sao., upon the draft beam A, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.

3. Also, the handles F F, brace f, quadrant G, and set-screw g, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose shown.

4. Also, the Within-described agricultural implement, consisting of the draft-beam A,
