S. T. BANE. SHIELD FOR HORSBSHOE GALKS.
Patented July 23, 1889.
/% T/SM Inventor Wz nea ses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH T. BANE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SHIELD FOR HORSESHOE-CALKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,506, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed November 23, 1888. Serial No. 291,693. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SETH T. BANE, of Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shields for I'Iorseshoc-Oalks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improvement in shields for horseshoe-calks, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a horseshoe with the shield in place; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 50 as, Fig. 1.
Many horses have a habit of standing with the heel of one hind foot resting on the top of the other hind foot, and when sharp-shod often cut themselves in this way. My invention is designed to obviate this, and to also prevent the heel-calks from becoming dull in the stable.
A represents a horseshoe.
G represents a box made of wrought or malleable metal adapted to inclose both heelcalks between its front and rear sides 0 O,
and having a flange C extending from the tom of the box and the weight of the horse will be transmitted to the box through the flange O.
B represents a piece of angle-iron, the flanges of which are narrow and fit over the top and back of the heel of the shoe, and it has preferably a lip F at each end to prevent lateral displacement, and when the box G and angle-iron B are in position, as shown in the drawings, and are drawn together, the angleiron B locks the box G firmly to the shoe.
Any kind of a fastening preferred may be employed to lock the angle-iron to the box G.
The form of fastening shown in the drawings consists of a bolt E, whose shank passes loosely through a hole at the junction of the flange O and the front of the box, the head of the bolt being too large to pass through said hole and its threaded end passing through the angle-iron B and being provided with a nut D, which draws the box G and the angle-iron B together.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box adapted to receive the two heelcalks of a horseshoe, in combination with an angle-iron to fit over the heel of the shoe, and means, substantially as described, for locking said box and angle-iron together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the box G, having the flange O thereon, angle-iron B, bolt E,
and nut D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
SETH T. BANE.
