Description

(.No Model.)
. I. F. BASSFORD,
HARVESTER GUTTER.
Patented July 24, 1883.
'MJ agg@ fff ATTURNBYS WITNBSSBS;
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIeEo ISAAC BASSFORD,OF HELENA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PATRICK A. LAR-GEY AND LEE MANTLE, OF BUTTEV CITY, MONTANA TERRITORY.
HARVESTER-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,956, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed February 27, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC FRANKLIN Bass- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke 5 and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester-Cutters 5 and I do hereby declare that Vthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable oth- Io ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view of a portion I5 of my improved harvester-cutter, and Fig. 2
is a cross-section of the same. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of 2o harvester-cutters in which the knives or cutters are detachable from the Sickle-bar 5 and it consists in the improved construction, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, of the cap-plate, by means of which the knives 25 or cutters are clamped and firmly held upon the sickle-bar.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the knives or cutters, which are of the usual shape, but constructed with the end Iiange, a,
3o adapted to iit into a groove, b, in the back part ofthe Sickle-bar. (Shown at B.)
C is the cap-plate, the top partei' which is made slanting, and provided with holes e for the insertion of screws E, by means of Awhich 3 5 the cap plate is tightened down upon the sickle-bar, the screws E passing through apertures f in the cutters, which register with screw-holes g in the sickle-bar, said holes be ing arranged in a line parallel to and in front 4o of the groove b, which receives the flanges a ofthe individual knives or cutters, which are placed side by side, impinging upon one another sidewise, as will clearly appear by referenee to Fig. 1 of the drawings. Thecap- 4 5 plate `iS constructed with a shouldered web, C, the shoulder c of which fits into the recess formed between the back part of the cutters and the top part of the sickle-bar, back of the recess b, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Thisweb Chasa lip or ilange, D,which 5o projects down over and covers the rear edge of the sickle-bar, and has a Series of screwholes, d, through which Ascrews (shown at G) Inay be inserted into the back edge of bar B, thus affording a twofold fastening for the cap- 55 plate upon the body of the bar-viz., the top screws, E, and back Screws, G. By this construction of the cap-plate, with its web C D re-enforced by the shoulder c, the rigidity and strength of the sickle-bar are greatly increased, 6o and it is impossible for vdust and dirt to enter the space between the sickle-bar and removable cutters. Again, if by any accident the cutter-anges a. should break off, the cutters cannot become displaced or work loose, as 6 5 their-back edge will bear against the shoulder c of the cap-plate, the construction .of which is such that it can readily be made by suitably constructed dies or rollers at a merely nominal cost. 7o
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the sickle bar B, grooved longitudinally at b, and having a se- 7 5 ries of bolt-holes, g, detachable knives or cutters A, having anges a, cap-plate C, constructed with a back web, C D, having shoulder c, and fastening screws G and E, constructed and combined substantially in the 8o manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The cap-plate C, provided with the back web C D, having shoulder c, and provided with the bolt-holes d and e, in combination S5 with the flanged knives A and longitudinally grooved lower bar, B, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 'own I have hereunto afliXed my signature 9o HWitnesses:
THOMAS H. CARTER, HUGH F. GALEN.
