Be it known that we, HENRY O. sAGEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and JOHN SEI- BOLD, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, both residing at Mount Vernon,in the county of Westchester, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Carriage-Curtains, of which the following is a specification;

This invention relates to fastenings for carriage-curtains and other articles to which it can be applied; and it consists in certain peculiar and novel features described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of our improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the fastening on the line as a: of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view of the fastening. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken on the line y y of Fig. 2, showing the under side of the supplemental plate N, between which and plate 0 the curtain is secured. Fig. 5 is a like section as Fig. 2, except that the front part of the hinged covering-plate G H M is shown raised off the opening D.

The letter Adesignates a portion of an outer curtain of a carriage, and B is one of the stationary projecting buttons to which such curtains are attached, the usual manner of attachment being by means of button-holes, which were formed along the edges of the curtains, and which were buttoned on or passed over the projecting heads of the buttons. This method of securing the curtains is ob: jectionable, for the reason that the buttonholes sometimes get enlarged and the buttons then fail to keep hold of the curtains, and sometimes when the curtain is stiff it is diflicult to engage the curtain with the buttons. Another common method of attaching the curtains to the carriage-top is by means of straps and buckles; but these are sometimes unsightly.

Our device is an improvement upon such and other formerly-used methods, as it gives great facility in fastening and unfastening the curtains, and imparts security to the fast ening and possesses a neat appearance.

In carrying out our invention we employ a foundation-plate O, which has through its forward end an opening D of sufficient size to permit the easy passage through it of the button or button-head B. The opening D on its rear side communicates with a smaller open-- ing E made in the plate, of sufficient size to 1 easily admit the passage through itp f the plate, whose front end G comes down upon the forward part of the plate 0, so as to cover and close the openings D E. Next behind the part Gwe form in the covering-plate a socket H, which is so arranged as to come over the smaller opening E of plate 0. This socket is of such size as readily to receive the head of the button. The sides of the covering-plate behind the cover G extend downward and re ceive the hinge-pintle I,- which passes also through the ears J J, that rise from the edges of the plate O, and the covering-plate is thereby hinged to the plate 0. A spring is formed on the hinge by means of wire wound around the pintle, the ends of the wire L L being arranged to act against the plate 0 and the covering-plate in rear of the pintle, so as to press them apart, thereby pressing the forward end of the covering-plate downward upon the plate 0.

The part of the covering-plate in rear of the hinge has an inclination away-from plate 0, and forms a thumb-piece M for operating the covering-plate and raising its front part G upward from the plate O when desired.

The apparatus is attached to the curtain A by means of an outer plate N, which may be of'the same dimensions as the plate 0, and which is formed, as is the curtain, with openings D and E, like those in plate O. The curtain is secured between the plates 0 and N by rivets O or other suitable means.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The fastening, with the curtain to which it is secured, is brought to such a position that the button-head will be opposite the openings D in the plates O and N and in the curtain A.

On pressing the thumbpiece M the coveringplate is turned on the hinge and its front end G is lifted, uncovering the opening D and leaving it free to receive the button B. The button on passing through the opening D comes above the level of the plate 0, and its shank F, being then opposite the smaller opening E, is pushed-into the same into the position shown in Fig. 2, and on releasing the thumb piece M the covering-p1ate is brought by its spring down upon the plate G into the position shown in the drawings, so as to close the opening D, the socket H receiving and closing upon the button, which consequently becomes locked, the under side of the buttonhead resting on the edges of the opening E made in plate 0.

In Fig. 5 the hinged covering-plate G H M is raised, so as to uncover the opening D and permit the fastening to be moved on the button toward the left hand, so as to bring the opening D opposite the button and allow the fastening to be taken off the button.

The invention is applicable as a fastening. for other articles beside carriage-curtains.

What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1'. The combination, with the button B, of the plate 0, formed with the openings D E, and the covering-plate hinged to the plate 0 and formed with the cover G, the socket H, and the thumb-piece M, substantially as described.

2. The curtain A and plates 0 and N, formed With openings D E to receive the button or article to which the fastening is to be applied,

in combination with the hinged covering-plate formed with the cover G, the socket H, and thumb-piece M, substantially as described.
