CUFF-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,435, dated July 9, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES OILLEY EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaterbury Centre, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cuff-Holders, of

. and beauty, the cuif must'project a certain uniform distance beyond the coat-sleeve; but when fastened to the wristband the projection depends upon the length of the shirtsleeve. If that be long, the cuff projects too far; if short, it does not project at all, and even if of the exact length the movements of the arm so change its relative length as to cause continual annoyance.

The object of my invention is to provide a fastener that shall hold the end uniformly in any desired position under all circumstances and positions of the arm, and which can be quickly and securely adjusted, and easily and readily removed. I attain this object by the construction of holder illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a cuff and a portion of a coat-sleeve with my improved form of fastener shown in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of my improved cuff holder or fastening.

A indicates a stud constructed in the form of an ordinary sleeve-button, having a base of suitable curved form and provided with an eye in either end. This stud or button A is sewed to the inside of the coat-sleeve at the proper distance from the lower end of said sleeve, which will be regulated at will.

B indicates the fastener, which consists, essentially, of a button cap or plate b, to the top surface of which the two ends of a suitable wire I) are secured. The ends of the said wire, when secured to the cap or plate 13, are I spread apart to form an enlarged opening at this point, and project downwardly from the said cap or plate to form a shank b therefor. The wire I) is bent into shape to form a securing-loop b the two ends of which are secured to the top surface of the plate A, as above described. From the shank b the loop 12 extends back in a curved form, as shown, and the space between the said wires decreases toward the rear of the loop,where a circular supplemental loop b is formed. The wire used in the formation of my improved fastening is preferably spring-wile, which may be nickeled or otherwise ornamented, as may be desired. I

To attach the cuff in connection with the fastener and ultimately with the sleeve, the operation is as follows: The fastener'is passed through the button-holes of the cuff W, leaving the button cap or plate I) resting on the inside thereof. The cuff carrying the fastener B is then inserted in the sleeve W, and the stud or button A passed through the opening between the wires b, adjacent to the shank b and drawn down until the said button or stud A engages with the supplemental loop 19 which operation, in view of a predetermined arrangement, will properly adjust the cuff so that it will project from the end of the sleeve the desired distance.

The form of the wire loop may be varied at will, and lengthened or shortened, as desired.

The novelty and utility of my improved device being obviously apparent and appreciable, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described cuff-holder, consisting of the button I) and the upwardly-projecting opposite arms b 19 rearwardly bent to form a neck or shank b and terminating in theloop b in combination with a device secured to the sleeve for engaging the loop, substantially as specified.
