B. G. SOLTMANN.
TAPE MEASURE.
No. 406,065. Patented July 2, 1889.
INVENTUB Emma Gk fio'kimwm 'fmnnm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD G. SOLTMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TAPE-MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,065, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed April 22, 1839 Serial No. 308,057 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, EDWARD G. SoL'rMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tape-Measures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tape-measures; and it consists, essentially,.in combining with the reel-handle a movable finger-piece, and also in providing means for rigidly securing the finger-piece, as fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a tapemeasure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation of the reel-handle and its attached finger-piece. Fig. l is a plan or face view of the finger-piece detached. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a tape-measure, illustrating a different method of securing the finger-piece to the reel-handle. Fig. 6 is a sectional clevation of the reel-handle and a finger-piece, as shown in Fig. 5, attached thereto. Fig. 7 is a plan or face view of the said finger-piece detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the casing.
15 is the tape, (1 the reel, and D the hinged reel-handle, said parts constituting a tapemeasure of a well-known construction.
E is the finger-piece, which, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, is provided with a longitudinal slot (1, and secured to'the reel-handle D by screws b and e passing through the slot. \Vhen the heads of the screws are out of conl tact with the finger-piece, or bear lightly upon the same, said linger-piece can be drawn in or out, so as to adjust the leverage to the difficulty experienced in swinging open the hinged reel-handle. If desired, the screws can be tightened up after such adjustment to retain the finger-piece firmly in its adjusted position.
In Figs. 5, 6, and 7 I have illustrated another method of securing the finger-piece to the reel-handle. In this case the finger-piece E can turn about a pivot I) at or near its inner end, so as to bring it entirely within the periphery of the reel-handle when not in use. It can be secured when in its outer position by a screw 0', the end of which engages a threaded recess (1, or a simple recess formed in the reel-handle.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tape-measure, the combination,with the reel-handle, of a movable finger-piece, substantially as described.
2. In a tape-measure, the combination, with the reel-handle, of an adjustable finger-piece and means for rigidly securing the same to the reel-handle, substantially as described.
3. In a tape-measure, the combination, with the reel-handle, of a fingerpiece provided with a longitudinal slot and screws for securing the finger-piece to the reel-handle, substantially as described.
4. In a tape-measure, the combination, with the reel-handle, of a movable fin ger-piece and means for rigidly securing the same to the reel-handle, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of April, 1889.
EDWARD G. SOL'PMANN.
