HORSE-TAIL HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,941, dated June 25, 1889. Application tiled June 27, 1888. Renewed May 29, 1889. Serial No. 312,654. (No model.)

Be it known that I, RODNEY L. BETTs, of Brunswick, county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Tail Holders, of which t`.1e following is a specification.

My invention relatesto improvements upon that class of devices which are used to tie up or secure horses tails during muddy weather; and my improvements consist (as will bemore fully detailed hereinafter in connection with its illustration) in the combination, with a strap having upon one of its ends a buckle and the otherend made to connect therewith, of prongs having turned-down inner ends projected from the strap proper, and at their other ends provided with heads to attach to the strap by means of a supplemental strap produced by folding the strap proper back on itself, exteriorly riveted to the strap proper, with the heads of the prongs arranged between the supplemental strap part and the strap proper.

I am aware of t-he fact that horse-tail holders have been made in which prongs were used on the inner face of a strap,but with the sharp ends of the prongs so arranged that when the device was applied and drawn in tightly to secure the tail the prongs as radially projected inwardly would prick the animal and make the parts sore. To obviate this difficulty and to provide a cheap and easy means for connecting the prongs of lthe strap is the object of my invention.

Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there is a sheet of drawings containing three figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of its parts by letter-reference used in all of them.

Of the illustrations, Figure l shows the device with the ends of the strap connected but not drawn as when attached for purposes of use. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the strap laid out fiat with what is its inner surface and that containing the prongs turned uppermost. Fig. 3 shows a section taken on the line c a: of Fig. 2.

The several parts of the device thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:

The letter S designates the strap proper, S2 the supplemental strap part, B the buckle, and b the buckle end of the strap made with the holes o for connection.

The letters 'P designate the prongs having` heads 7L and downturned inner ends e. The supplemental strap part S2 is shown as produced from the strap proper by passing the end of the latter through and beyond where connected with the buckle and securing it to the strap proper by means of rivets R. The

function of this strap part S2 is to secure the heads h of the prongs between the supplemental strap part and the strap proper. As thus made and arranged the turned-down ends of the prongs enable them to get. a better hold upon the tail, and they obviate the danger of pricking the animal and making the parts sore.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a horse-tail holder, the co1nbination,with the strap S, threaded through a buckle-eye and folded back on itself for connection and for attachment to the buckle-eye, of the prongs P, made with heads h and downturned ends c, with the prongs passed through said strap S, and having their heads secured between the latter and the connected strap part S2, substantially as shown and described.
