CUFF-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a convenient and neat device for holding cuffs or other garments in position, that can be fast ened without inconvenience to any part of the shirt-sleeve or garment. I accomplish this result by means of the device described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings herewith accompanying, in which-- Figure 1 illustrates the arrangement of my improved cuff-ho1der when in use. Fig. 2 is a plan of said holder detached from the cuff and closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the under side of the holding-jaws or head. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the head portion, taken through line as, Fig. 3, in its closed position; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, in its opened position.

In each of said views similar reference-letters indicate corresponding parts.

The cuff-holder as constructed consists of an arm a, provided with a button a or a hookshaped end 60 for securing the same to the cuff. To the other end of the arm a is preferably secured, by means of a pin 1), a jaw c, said jaw being adapted to turn in a horizontal plane on the arm a, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The ,jaw c is provided at one end with a T arm or stem 0', extending up into a chambered head or button cl and engaging with a spring cl in said head, thus pivotally securing the head or button portion to the under clamping-jaw c. 7

As shown in the drawings, the spring at is preferably arranged within the button or easing d and a back plate d. The back. plate (1 is perforated at cl and preferably as at 61 as indicated, the T-end of the lower jaw 0 projecting up through the opening 01 in the plate and bearing against the end of the spring, substantially as indicated. The other end of the spring, which is preferably provided with a tooth (1 projects down through the opening or slot d and engages with the lower jaw, as described.

The jaw (i: may be provided with teeth 0 which engage with the tooth d on the spring in the casing, thereby gripping the goods and securing the holder in position.

In applying the device to use, the end a or the button a on the arm a is inserted in the button-hole of the cuff, and the shirt-sleeve is brought in position between the clamping-j aw c and the raised head portion or button (1, as shown in Fig. 5, and the button is then brought down upon the lower jaw, firmly grasping the goods and holding the cuff in position.

By securing the head and the lower jaw c to the arm a by means of the pin 1), so that the same maybe turned about said pin as an axis, the holder can be used on either arm, thereby avoiding the making of right and left holders.

The particular advantage in this device, shown and described in the foregoing, is that the cuff may be adjusted in relation to the sleeve and caused to project as far from the sleeve of the coat as may be desirable.

The device is of a neat and simple construction, having no sharp projections thereon, permitting the holder to be used on any part of the sleeve, and lying flat on the arm, so as not to come in contact with the lining of the garment, allowing the pulling off of the coat without first removing the cuffs from the sleeve, as there is no possible danger of any part of the coat-sleeve lining catching on the holder, and thereby causing the annoyance and inconvenience which is so common with cuffholders as heretofore made.

I am aware that pivoted clasps have been used on a bar or arm with means for attaching the same to the cuff; but a head or button pivotally secured to a stem, said stem being attached to the bar or arm, or being formed integrally thereon, and extending up into the casing of said button or head to adapt the same to the special. purpose for which I use it, is new.

One of the most important features in the above-described invention is the arrangement of the head or button pivotally secured to the stem on the arm and upon which the new result performed by the holder depends. By raising the head or button the same is held in its open position by the spring in the casing, and the goods may be easily placed upon the lower jaw and the head closed down upon the same, whereas as in holders of this class as heretofore made it becomes necessary to hold the jaws open until the goods are inserted in the same, which causes a great annoyance and inconvenience.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim iS- 1. In a cuff-l1older,tl1e combination, with an arm provided with means for attaching the same to a cuif or other article, of a head or button secured to said arm by means of a stem extending up from said arm and projecting up into the upper clamping-head, which consists of a casing, as set forth, and engaging with a spring arranged within said casing and operating to cause the holding-contact of the head and arm, for the purposes set forth.

As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described cuff-holder consisting of a head or button cl, pivotally secured to a stem 0 and provided with teeth and a spring d, and the jaw 0, provided with teeth 0 said jaw being secured to an arm affor securing the same to a culf, substantially as described.
