HITUHING DEVICE FOR 301938.
No. 405,872. Patented June 18, 1889.
ml wwms, Emu; W32 77 Jaw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC PALMER, OF MIDDLETOWVN, CONNECTICUT.
HITCHING DEVICE FOR ROPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,372, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed March 12 1889. Serial No. 303,009. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hitching Devices for Ropes, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates more particularly to hitching devices for securingasingle rope, by which a hammock may be suspended.
I will describe my improvement in detail, and then point out the novel features in a claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hitching device embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
In the example of my improvement shown the hitching device is secured upon a block A; but, of course, it may be secured to any suitable support. The hitching device comprises a shank B, which, as shown, is screwthreaded to engage the support A. Beyond the shank B is a downwardl y-extendin g shoulder C, which shoulder, when the shank is in engagement with the support, is flush against the side of the support, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1. Beyond said shoulder C the device 30 is provided with a downwardly-ext ending and transverse depression D. Beyond said depression and in front of the same is an upwardl y extending fork E, provided with prongs a.
It will be seen more clearly by an examination of Fig. 2 that the crotch of said fork is higher than the depression D. This is advantageous, because the depression D is admirably adapted to receive the loose end F of 0 the rope shown in Fig. 1, while the standing part G of the rope, owing to the elevated position of the crotch of said fork, obtains avery strong bight upon the portion F, which prevents the slipping of the rope.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A hitching device consisting of a substantially-straight stem provided near its forward end with a downwardly-extending transverse 5o depression, and a fork extending upwardly from said stern in front of said depression and having its crotch higher than said depression, substantially as specified.
ISAAC E. PALMER.
