SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,923, dated June 11, 1889.

Application filed December 5, 1888. Serial No. 292,768. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MOORES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Back-Band Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists in the specific construction of certain devices by means of which the bearing-pads are attached to the backband in such manner that they may be read ily adjusted thereon in any desired position, as will be fully described hereinafter.

Figure 1 represents a front end View of the back-band with the bearing-pads in position;

Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a side view of the loop and tongue, and Fig. 4 a front View of the buckle-hook at each end of the band for supporting the chain.

. 1 represents the back-band, consisting of a strip of a proper length and width,which may be of any suitable material.

2 2 represent bearing-pads, the inner surfaces of which are adapted in shape to bear upon the back of the horse at the properpoints.

3 represents a loop having flat portions 4 4 at each end, by means of which it is secured to the outer surface of each bearing-pad, as shown.

5 represents a longitudinal central portion, which is raised above the end portions, as shown in Fig. 3.

6 represents a tongue, which is hinged to the portion 5 at one end of the same, asshown.

7 7 represent buckle-hooks of any proper construction, one of which is attached to the back-band at each end, as shown. The hook of the buckle is adapted to hold the tracechain in the manner well understood. The longitudinal port-ion 5 is provided with a central slot, which is wide enough to permit the tongue 6, when covered by the material of the band, to pass into the same.

The bearing-pads maybe adjusted upon the back-band in the following manner: That portion of the back-band which is over the tongue when the parts are in place, as shown in Fig. 2, is loosened from the'tongue by raising the latter for this purpose until the band is free. The pad then may be moved into any desired position. place by forcing the tongue with that portion of the band beneath it into the longitudinal slot of the central portion.

It should be understood that any of the buckle-hooks adapted to back-bands may be used.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In combination with a back-band, bearing-pads having loops 3 3, and pivoted tongues 6 6, as described.

2. The combination of the back-band 1, the bearing-pads 2 2, the loops 3 3, having flat end portions 4 4, and longitudinal portion 5,

and pivoted tongue 6.
