BOSOM PAD.
Patented June 11, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH \VHE ELER, OF ALBANY, NEWV YORK.
BOSOM-PADf SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,881, dated June 11, 1 889.
Application filed March 7, 1888. Serial No. 266,438. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SETH WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bosom Pads or Forms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bosom pads or forms; and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, light, and strong form which will be yielding and elastic when subjected to pressure.
In the ordinary practice dress-forms are made of permanent materials-as metal, rubber, fabrics held in shape by stiffening ribs or frames, &c.and these, besides being liable to heat the body of the wearer, are affected by perspiration, and cannot, on account of their cost, be thrown aside and replaced by new ones.
It is my object, further, therefore, to provide a form which will have the necessary elasticity and strength, and which, besides being thoroughly ventilated, may when soiled or injured in any way be thrown aside and replaced by a new one.
With these objects in view'the invention consists in a bosom-pad formed of a single unseamed piece of fabric, substantially as hereinafter described, said fabric being corrugated and perforated and capable of retaining its shape (or regaining it after being distorted) without the aid of supplemental stifiening means.
The invention is more fully described hereinafter. in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a form having radial corrugations. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view of a formhaving spiral corrugations. Fig. 4 is a similar View of a form having concentric corrugations.
Referring by letter to the drawings, the forms may be of any desired shape; but they are preferably rounded or semi-spherical, as
shown in the drawings, and they are formed of a single piece of paper, stiffened linen, or
cloth-covered paper stamped or blocked into the desired shape.
The corrugations consist of the ribs A and the intervening grooves 13, and they may be either radial, as in Fig. 1, or spiral, as in Fig.-
3, or concentric,as in Fig. 4. The object and advantage of these corrugations are that they add materially to the strength of the form, and at the same time allow it to yield without cracking or creasing the surface. ing released from pressure the form provided with corrugations immediately regains its original shape.
These forms may be further provided with perforations in their sides, as seen at 0, thus allowing a free circulation of air in their interior and preventing a heating of the body of the wearer. In practice the perforations should be provided in the ridges of the corrugations and not in the furrows. The forms are light, thereby obviating the chafing which -usually attends the use of heavy unyielding forms.
It will be understood that the arches which comprise the surface of these forms strengthen the same and enable them to resist pressure. This corrugated form may be applied to other materials besides paper and the other materials above referred to with advantage.
It will be observed by reference'to the several forms of bosom-pads, as shown, that the salient feature resides in corrugating the pad in lines throughout the entire body of the pad.
' Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
Asa new article of manufacture, a bosompad formed of .a single unseamed piece of fabric corrugated and perforated, substantially as described.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SETH WHEELER.
Witnesses:
