P. D. DOWD.
WATER GONVBYBR. No. 404,780. llanemted June 4, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK D. DOVD, OF CORTLAND, NElV YORK.
WATER-CONVEYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,780, dated J' une 4, 1889.
Application filed September 29, 1888l Serial No. 286,812. (No model.)
Y York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVater-Conveyers, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in water-conveyers; and
it consists of a series of telescopic tubes, one
of the end sections being provided with a mouth piece carrying a swiveled head adapted to receive into it the mouth of a faucet or supply-pipe or the spout of a pump, and the other end section provided with a rest and means for holding the section in place on the vessel to be filled, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective means for conducting water from a supply-pipe or pump to any desired point, either to iill a vessel or for any other purpose where it is desired to use water at a distance from the supplying' medium. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure l represents a side view of the conveyer in extended position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the conveyer in closed position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a small end section carrying the swiveled head. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The letter A indicates the conveyer, composed of a series of intermediate telescopic tubes c and two end sections B and C, respectively. The section B is provided with a plate b, which forms a rest for and prevents the Section from turning. A standard Z9 is secured to the section at each end of the plate b, and jointly serve to hold the section in position, or as legs for sustaining it in rigid position, as more fully hereinafter described.
The section C is provided with an elbow or mouth-'piece c, into which is swiveled ashort tube c, carrying a head c2, which is adapted to receive the end of a supply-pipe, faucet, mouth-piece of a hydrant, or spout of a pump.
It will be noticed that the telescopic sections are made tapering, so that when the conveyor is extended in operative position the end c of each tube will iit tightly within the end a2 of its adjacent tube, thus insuring a comparatively tight joint, dispensing with the usual packing. After use the tapering feature of the tubes admits of a ready Aand quick shutting of said tubes one within the other.
The operation of the device is obvious. The head-piece is placed in position with the mouth of the supply-pipe or spout of thepump within the head-piece, and the tube is extended in the desired position, with the section B, if it be a vessel that it is desired to fill, resting on the edge of the receptacle with one standard on the inside and the other on the outside thereof, and the water turned on.
It will be observed that by means of the swiveled head the conveyer may be turned in any direction, and is adapted to be used with a supply-pipe having a horizontal mouth-piece or a downwardly-projecting one.
The device is particularly useful in conveying water from a hydrant, pump, or supply-pipe within the house to vessels placed outside of the house, or at a distance from the supply within the house, effecting a saving of both time and labor over the old way of filling vessels by iirst iilling a bucket and then emptying its contents intothe receptacle to be iilled.
Vhen not in use, the device, by means of its telescopic qualities, forms a compact body and may be placed in a position handy for immediate use. The section B is provided with a handle D,by which the device may be readily carried in the hand.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An apparatus for conveying water, consisting of a series of telescopic tubes, each tube made tapering, whereby, when extended, the larger end of one -tube will fit tightly within the smaller end of the adjacent tube, and a head section provided with a mouthpiece carrying a swiveled head adapted to receive the spout or mouth-piece of a hydrant or supply-pipe, substantially as speciiied.
2. An apparatus for conveying water, con- IOO sistug of si series of telescopic tubes, each tube made tapering, so that when extended for use the larger end of each tube will it tightly Within the smaller end of each adjacent tube, a, head section provided with a mouth-piece carrying a Swiveled head, und t foot-pieee provided with a rest or holder for retaining' said foot-piece in proper position, substantially as specified.
A Witter-conveyer consisting of :L Series of intermediate telescopic tubes a, the end Sections B und C, the former provided with :t plate b and standards b', :tud the lutter with an elbow c mid swiveled bend c C2, substantially as specified. a
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1u presence of two Witnesses.
