Description

I. STOUT. GAR COUPLING.
(No Model.)
No. 404,743.. Patented Junev4, 1 889.
S E S S E N T I V I? Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC STOUT, OF MACKINAVV, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,743, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed April 4, 1889. $eria1No. 305,956. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC STOUT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mackinaw, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplings; and it consists in the novel construction and arran gement of the parts thereof, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for ordinary draw-heads, whereby the coupling-pin used therewith is supported and caused automatically to engage the coupling-link, which is guided into the opening in the draw-head, the said guide being operated by the opposite draw-head to release the coupling-pin.
The above object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a car-coupling, showing the pin supported above the draw-head and the partsin position for coupling. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the pin supported in full lines and released in dotted lines.
A refers to the transverse beam of the carbody, beneath which is supported the ordinary draw-head A. To the beam A, on each side of the draw-head, are bolted brackets B B, the ends of which are provided with slots 1), by means of which the rectangular frame 0 is adj ustably attached thereto. The lower cross-bar of this frame 0 is cut away, as shown, while the upper cross-bar has a central recess 0, within which the coupling-pin lies.
Extending parallel with the upper crossbar of the frame 0 is a similar cross-bar D, the ends thereof being extended downward and pivotally attached to the side pieces of the rectangular frame. The bar D has a recess c, which, with the recess 0 in the frame v 0, provides an opening through which the coupling-pin is inserted and supported above the draw-head by the enlarged head thereof resting upon the upper edges of the frames C and D, and these frames are held together by a spring-catch cl and released by a pivoted lever, the operation of which will be hereinafter set forth.
To the cross-bar D are rigidly secured bars F, upon which slides the frame G, the crossbar thereof supporting a roller H, for guiding the coupling-link into the draw-head, and this frame is support-ed upon the bars F by the coiled springs E, which hold the same normally elevated. To the cross-bar of the frame G is attached an upwardly-projecting arm I, which is adj ustably connected by means of the rod 7a to the lever L, the said lever, when the frame G is forced rearwardly by the opposite draw-head, tripping the springcatch (1, which allows the frame D to drop and the pin to fall into the opening in the drawhead and engage the coupling-link.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the draw-head of a car, of a pin-support consisting of a suitable supported transverse bar, a bar pivoted thereto, and provided with means for releasing a catch connecting the bars, substantially as shown.
2. In a pin-support and link-guide for carcouplings, a frame 0, adj ustably secured to the car-body, the bar D, pivoted thereto and provided with rods F F, frame G, sliding upon said bars F, and carrying a roller on the cross-bar thereof, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a pin-support and link-guide for car-couplings, of brackets rigidly secured to the car-body above the drawhead, a rectangular frame supported thereby and carrying a frame D, which is pivotally attached thereto, the said frame D carrying depending bars, to which a sliding frame is connected, the cross-bar of the sliding frame carrying a roller, and an arm for operating ale- Ver engaging with a spring-catch, whereby the pin-supporting bars are separated when the roller-carrying frame is depressed, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in a pin-support and link-guide for caroonp1ings, of a rigid frame attached to the car-body, said framehavinga spring-catch and a central recess, a swinging frame pivoted thereto having a corresponding recess, a pivoted lever for releasing the spring-catch, guide-rods for supporting a sliding frame, the said sliding frame being conneeted to the guide-rods and to the pivoted frame by coiled springs, and carrying a roller and an arm, which is connected by a rod to the pivoted lever, the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
