Description
UNEIED S'rn'rEs @ATENE oEEroE FREDERICK 'rErsEE7 or DAEVILLE, KENTUCKY, Assrenon on ONE-HALE Hrs EIGHT To DANIEL n. YErsEE, oE sAME PLACE.
lMPFOl/EMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. LUS/H734, dated February 17, 1874; application led June 24, 1873. Y
To all whom 'it may concern: A y
Be it known that I, FEED. YEisEn, of Dan ville, in the county ot' Boyle and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Coupling; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of myinvention consists in combinin g, with an ordin ary pin and link coupling, a swin gin g bar under each draw-head, weighted at its inner end, and provided with an upwardprojecting flange or lip at the outer end, for the purpose of supporting the link and guiding the same while coupling the cars, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tothe annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, a longitud inal vertical section of my improved car-coupling; and Fig. .3 is a longitudinal section, showing my invention in the act of coupling.
A A represent two ordinary draw heads, with coupling-pins B B and coupling-link C. Under each draw-head swings a board or bar, l), by means of arms a, a, which are pivoted to said bar, and to the draw-head A. On the rear end of the bar D is secured a weight, E, and at the front or outer end is formed a lian ge or lip, b, which projects upward. In the outer end of the bar D, immediately in rear of the flange or lip b, is a hole or aperture, through which the couplingpin B passes when the cars are coupled. When the pin is drawn up out of the hole in the bar D, the weight E will throw the outer end of said bar .forward and upward, so that the ange or lip b will extend up in fron-t of the end ot' the draw-head, and thus support and hold the link in a proper. horizontal position to enter the opposite drawhead. The pin in this draw-head being placed in an inclined position in the pin-hole, in the top ofthe drawhead, when the ears are brought. together to be coupled, the concussion will jar this pin so that it will fall down vertically to its proper position. ends of the bars D D strike each other, and the rear sides of the lips being curved, they both slide back from under the lower edges of the drawbars, and the pins fall down into and through the holes in the bars, as shown in the drawing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with an ordinary pin and link coupling, the swinging bars D, having weights E at their inner ends, and ilanges or lips b at their outer ends, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoinrl have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of May, 1873.
FREDERICK YEISER.
