UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. RIDER, OF NEWVARK, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR AUTOMATICALLY OPERATING THE STOP-COCK OF A GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,733, dated J uno 4, 1889.
Application filed June 6, 1888. Serial No. 276,195. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES M. RIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Devices for Automatically Operating the Stop-Cock of a Gas-Burner; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for automatically operating the stopcock of a gas-burner by the unlocking orlocking of the door of the apartment in which the gas-jet is located; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door having my said invention attached thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of parts of my said invention.
Referring to said drawings, A A represent the door-jambs, B the door hinged to the jamb A. To the jamb A is secured agas-pipe 0, having suitable connection with the source of supply.
0' is a bracket secured to the door B and connected to .the pipe 0 by a suitable hinged joint at a. Said bracket is bent so that the gas-burner c is located about three inches from the door.
I) is a small peep-hole in the door, so that it can readily be seen from the outside whether the gas is turned up or not.
D is the stop-cock provided with a projecting lever-arm d.
E is the lock secured to the door.
F is the keeper secured to the jamb A.
E is the casing of the lock.
G is the locking-bolt, having the projecting end G extending through an aperture in the end of the casing.
H is a rod pivotally secured at one end to the end of the locking-bolt and at its other end to the end of the lever-arm (Z. Said rod is formed in two sections h h, united by a screw-threaded connection, wherebythelength of the rod may be regulated. The section h is also formed with a loop 7L2, which allows for the expansion and contraction of the rod without affectin g its operation. On the end of the lever-arm d is formed a bearing d, in which is mounted a set-screw (1 having a tapered end.
(1 is a transverse conical recess in the gascock, in which the tapered end of the setscrew (1 enters. Said set-screw is adapted to engage with a stop (1 formed on the portion of the gas-pipe in which the stop-cock is located, and regulates the movement of said stop-cock, so as to regulate the amount of gas which flows when the door is locked. WVhen adjusted so that the point of the conical end' of the screw engages with the stop (1 the cock is almost closed and but a small amount of gas flows, but when said screw is screwed into the conical recess the larger part of the same engages with the stop and the cock cannot be turned so far, and a greater quantity. of gas is permitted to flow.
Then the door is locked, the gas is turned down very low, the parts of the device being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the key being inserted from the outside of the door and the lock unlocked by the operation of the locking-bolt and rod H, the stop-cock is operated and the gas turned on full. When it is de sired to have the gas located in another part of the room, I use a rod H, connected to a bell-crank lever H which is connected by a rod with another bell-crank lever H located in proximity to and secured by suitable means to the stop-cock, the unlocking of the lock through the mechanism described turning up the gas, and a spring H secured to one end of the lever H, operating to turn it off.
As a modification of my invention, I place a spring I in the keeper of the lock and secure to it a rod 1, which may also be connected in any suitable manner with the gas-cock. When the door is unlocked, the spring operates to move the rod in one direction and turn on the gas. WVhen the door is locked, the end of the locking-bolt engages with and compresses the spring and moves the rod in the opposite direction to turn down the gas.
Instead of having the end of the lockingbolt project through the casing, a rod 1 may be secured to said bolt and project through said casing, to which rod the mechanism hereinafter described may be secured.
As heretofore described, as the door is unlocked the gas is turned up, and if the key should be left in the outside of the door it is held there by simply sliding the bolt, which also prevents any one from looking the door from the outside. The peep-hole enables any one to see from the outside if the apartment is occupied and the gas turned up before entering.
As described, the device is more particularly adapted to use in water-closets of large buildings; but it can, of course, be used on the doors of any apartment.
IL ving thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the gas-burner a, secured to a door and having the stopcock D, provided with the lever-arm d, of the lock E, having the sliding locking-bolt G, and the rod ll, connecting the l'oelciug-bolt and lever-arm and formed in two sections h it, having a screw-threaded connection and provided with the loop 7L2, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the gas-burner 0, having the stop-cock D, provided with the lever arm (1, the bearing cl, setscrew (Z mounted in said bearing and having a tapered end, and the stop (1 011 the portion of the gaspipe in which the stop-cock is located, with which the end of the set-screw engages, of the lock E, having the locking-bolt G, and rod II, connecting said locking-bolt G and lever-arm (Z, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES M. RIDER.
