UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. GILLINGI-IAM, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO M. C. COOK, OF SAME PLACE.
PACKING FOR METALLIC BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,700, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed March 15, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. GILLINGHAM, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in packings for metallic boxes; and it consists in an oil and water proof packing composed of cork ground in oil, then formed into sheets, and backed by a sheet of canvas or other strong fabric, as willbe more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a packing which is oil and water proof, and especially adapted for use in cans designed for packing liquid paint and pasty matters, so that all necessity for soldering on the tops of cans is done away with and the cans made perfectly tight by merely screwing on their covers.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a box or can which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the packing-ring.
A represents a metallic can or box, of any desired shape or size, screw-threaded at its top Serial No. 303,428- (No model.)
porting-flange B at its top. The screw-threaded cap 0 snugly fits upon the top of this can and forms an absolutely-tight joint against oil and water by means of the ring-packing D, which rests on the flange B.
The packing is composed of cork, which is ground to a suitable consistency in linseedoil, then formed into sheets of suitable thickness, and backed by a sheet of canvas or other strong fabric, which is cemented thereto. The cork and oil are impervious to oil, whichwill readily dissolve or permeate rubber and other such packin gs, and renders the cans or boxes perfectly safe for packing or carrying oils, paints, or other substances. This packing is specially adapted for these boxes or cans, and has a greater value in this F connection than any other now known.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A packing for cans provided with screwcovers, and for other vessels of capacity, composed of comminuted cork saturated with linseed-oil and provided with a backing of canvas, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY R. GILLINGHAM.
