Be it known that I, FRENCH S. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas or Parasols; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in umbrellas or parasols.

The object of my invention is to furnish for the frames of all the usual forms of parasols 0r umbrellas a detachable cover, whereby when the cover becomes worn or defaced or a new or different cover is desired, or one of different pattern, the old one can be removed,

repaired, or washed, and this done easily by any one without the use of mechanism or any mechanical skill; and it consists in the special construct-ion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a parasol with my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a detached sectional view of a stick or handle, showing the parts for holding the cover to the stick; Fig. 3, a plan view of the cover detached from the frame; Fig. 4, a vertical section of the sleeve and cap, and Fig. 5 a sectional view of a rib with the cover and socketed tip applied.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents the completed cover formed of wedgeshaped sections, and which cover, I have discovered, can be stretched over the ribs or bows of the frame Without the use of an elastic or other devices usually employed for such purpose.

The cover may be constructed of any suitable material; but textile fabric is preferable. It is provided with socket-tips b at the points of the divisions of the fabric an d correspondin g with the ribs of the frame.

B is the frame, composed of ribs, stretchers,

notch, and runner of ordinary form, and which needs no further description.

D is an externally-screw-threaded sleeve placed on the stick directly against the notch d, and secured by suitable means, for permitting its removal from said stick.

F is an internally-threaded cap, made flaring or bell -mouthed at its lower end and adapted to slip over the stick and be screwed onto the sleeve D, to hold the cover by pressure against the flanged notch (1. As sticks of umbrellas or parasols are generally of a uniform size, it will be found that these sleeves and caps, when made in any quantity, will fit most any stick; but of course they can be varied in any size for that purpose.

In applying my improvement to a frame the sleeve D is first secured to the stick; then the cover, which is left with a central opening at the top, is placed over the stick and pulled down against the notch. The tips of the ribs are then inserted in the socket-tips b; and the cap F then screwed down over the sleeve D, which holds the cover to the notch and stick. As the cap is provided with the downwardly-projecting and flaring flange d, it will, when screwed in place, make a neat and secure joint over the notch and the cover at that point.

It will be understood that by my improve ment a cover can be used for an umbrella or parasol already covered as well as for a cover of a skeleton frame, and is also applicable to umbrellas or parasols and canopy-tops used in connection with vehicles.

I do not claim, broadly, any one of the several features of my invention; but what gives it its greatest utility is the combination of the particular features above described, whereby the cover can be applied to any umbrella or parasol of ordinary form without necessitating any change in any part of the old structure to which it is applied.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the frame and stick of an umbrella or parasol of ordinary form, of a removable cover, made of textile or other suitable material, provided with socketed tips in correspondence with the ribs of the frame, an externally-screw-threaded sleeve removably attached to said stick, and an internally screw threaded flaring or hellinouthed cap to connect with said sleeve and the notch of the frame for the purpose of securing the cover in place, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
