UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILBUR F. VAKEMAN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 404,513, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed December 20, 1888. Serial No. 294,224. (No model.)
T0 all whom. it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR F. WAKEMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Coupon, Memorandum, Receipt, Voucher, Cash-Check, Entry-Check, and Binder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined coupon, memorandum, receipt, voucher, cash-check, entry-check, and binder.
The object is to facilitate collections, expedite book-keeping, and furnish an automatic check against misappropriation of money.
The invention consists in a series of coupon-slips, each combining in itself a memoJ randum and receipt, a voucher and cashcheck for collector and cashier, and an entrycheck for the book-keeper, the said series of coupon-slips being protected by a binder so constructed as to admit of free access to the parts of the slips to be detached. and the stubs adjacent thereto without disturbing the portion nearer the back, and to further admit of access to the tops of the slips without exposing the portions below.
My invention further consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents the binder closed and in side elevation. Fig. 2 represents the binder turned back to disclose a full coupon-slip as far back as the line of entry-checks, and Fig. 3 represents the top of the binder turned down to disclose the memoranda at the tops of the coupon-slips.
The binder consists of a front cover A 'and a back cover A', preferably leather-coated and made separable, the two covers being provided each with a pair of perforations a near their left-hand edges, through which a suitable cord or tapeB is tied to connect them. The front cover A is jointed by a longitudinal hinge C, extending from the bottom to the top near its left-hand edge, and by a transverse hinge D, about one-quarter of the distance from the top to the bottom, (more or less,) so that the rigl1t-hand portion of the cover maybe turned back, as shown in Fig. 2, to disclose the coupon-slip E from its top to its bottom, and so that the top of the cover may be folded over toward the front to disclose the memoranda at the top of the coupon-slip, as shown in Fig. 8. The hinges C and D may be conveniently formed by separat-in g the body of the cover a short distance and allowing the leather coating to extend 'over the joint.
The coupon-slips, one of which is represented by E, are intended to each contain a set of separable coupons printed in blank, to serve as receipts for the payment of sums of money due at stated intervals. The couponslip herein shown is particularly adapted to the collection of monthly dues on a newspaper subscription, and for this purpose the yearly slip will contain twelve coupons, represented by c, each adapted to be torn from the slip along perforated lines c as the monthly payments are made. Each slip will further contain, at its top, memorandum of the district, naine of subscriber, number and street where he resides, and place where the collection is to be made. It will also contain, opposite each separable coupon-receipt, a stub, to serve as a cash-check, showing the amount received; and the said stub to the left of the cash-check will be provided with an entry-check to designate that the amount on the cash-check has been transferred to the books. Each coupon-slip will be further provided with a number corresponding to its number among a series of subscribers, and this number will be placed at the top ofthe slip, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and also on each separable coupon of the slip, and will serve to identify each coupon-receipt. This series of slips E are intended to be inclosed between the covers of the binder and bound together with the binder.
Among the important advantages are the following: I combine the mechanical features of the work of an office with the necessary appliances for outside work. Thus the coupon-slip taken to the subscriber or other patron presents to him essentially a duplicate of the books in the oice, so far as his own account is concerned, and these coupon-slips are so bound together that they may be presented and handledY with the least possible exertion. It is also extremely simple, and provides for vouchers in favor of and against all parties interested.
IVhile I have described the coupon-slip as well adapted to the work in connection with subscription to periodicals, it may be also well employed in connection with any branch or business where payments of an entire sum promised are to be collected at given intervals.
The specific construction of the couponslip will form the subject-matter of a separate application, the present application being limited to the construction of the binder and its combination with the coupon-slip, broadly considered.
IIavin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire 1o secure by Letters Patent, isM
l. The herein-described binder one of the covers of which is provided with a longitudinal joint and a transverse joint, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a series of coupon-slips, of a binder for securing the slips together and for protecting them, one of the covers of said binder having a joint extending longitudinally thereof and a joint extending transversely thereof, whereby the righthand portion of the coupon-slip may be exposed throughout its length Without diselosing the left-hand portion, and whereby the top of the slip may be disclosed Without disclosing the lower portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofl I have aflixcd my si nature in presence of two witnesses.
