MANIFOLDING ACCOUNT-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 16, 1909.
Application flied August 26, 1903. Serial No. 170,779.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMORY J. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Account- .Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of account books which is furnished by merchants and shop-keepers to their customers, and in which accounts of sales and payments are entered as they take place, and, more particularly, to that class of customers pass books in which, when an entry is made, a manifold copy is also simultaneously roduced, the manifold copy being retained by the merchant.
The objects of my invention are to provide a pass-book, of the character referred to, having removable leaves for the rece )tion of manifold copies of the entries in the ook, so arranged that both sides of the )ermanent leaves of the book may be utilize and written upon; also to provide such books with removable leaves having removable or separable extensions which form slips or sections for the reception of such memoranda as it may be desirable to make in connection with the various transactions as they occur. I attain these objects by means of the construction and arrangement of parts herein after described and shown and. illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of my book partly open, and Fig. 2, a plan View of one of the interleaved sheets, hereinafter referred to, detached.
The account book proper consists of the usual sheets of paper forming permanent leaves a, ruled on both sides for debits and credits, the leaves being stitched and bound and rovided with a suitable back in the usua manner. Between each adjacent two of the permanent leaves a are secured and interleaved two other leaves b. These leaves may be of cheaper lighter paper than the ermanent leaves and are perforated on a iine 1) near to and parallel with their back margin, and are thus se arable and removable. The leaves I; may )e perforated transversely, as at 0, so that they may be removed in two or more sections. The leaves I) are wider than the leaves a and their front margins project beyond the front margins of the eaves a, thus leaving room on the removable leaves for notations which do not appear in the entries in the book proper,
Near the outer vertical margin of the leaves I), and parallel therewith, 1s a line of perforations cl which facilitates the removal of a narrow strip or ticket e from the edge of the separable leaf. Upon this ticket may be entered a notation of cash received or amount of debit or such other memorandum as may be desired.
In practice when an entry is made the writing bein done directly upon one of the leaves a, a s eet of manifoldlng paper of the size of the permanent page is placed back to back with the leaf written 11 ion, with the prepared side of the manifolding pa or against the adjoining interleaved reinova le sheet. When the opposite side of the permanent sheet is thus written upon, the manifolding paper is placed with its back to the page first written upon, and facing the other ad oining interleaved sheet. The interleaved sheets may be removed as fast as they are written upon, there being a separate sheet I) for each page of the permanent leaves a. After the sheets I) are removed, the proper memoranda may be made upon the blank spaces and removable checks, and such disposition may now be made of the removed portions as the merchants system of keeping accounts may require.
Some merchants keep the accounts of each of their customers in a separate book, and. instead of the customer keeping the passbook he is furnished with a slip bearing a manifold copy of each entry in the book, When my book here described is thus employed, the backs of each of the manifold slips may be utilized for the card or advertisement of the dealer.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s A manifolding salesbook, comprising a series of leaves (a) and e pair of leaves (b) a transverse weakened line or lines upon mterleeved between each ad acent two of which the leaf may be divided Into seet1ons. lo
