UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES K. SPRAGUE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,020, dated May 28, 1889. Application filed November 30, 1888. Serial No. 292,244. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES K. SPRAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom=Lifters, which are fully set forth in the following specification, referencebeing had tothe accompanyingdrawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 shows my improved transom-lifter in end elevation with the transom open andthe lifter locked in place.
Fig. 2 shows the same view of my device with the lifter unlocked and ready for action, the dotted outlines showing the changes of position the different parts undergo when changed from said position to the closed and locked position. Fig. 3 shows a part of the locking device of my transom-lifter provided with a special spring to hold it in place when locked. Fig. 4 shows the stud g g in plan view. Fig. 5 shows the end of the hookj in plan view.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to construct a transom-lifter by means of which the difficulty of moving the various parts, owing to the great friction to be overcome, is to be obviated to a much greater extent than hereto fore, and also at the same time provide a more efficient and easier-working locking device for said mechanism, and to attain said ends I construct my improved transomlifter in substantially the following manner, namely:
Two short posts, g and g 9 are fastened to the door-casing vertically above each other, the post or stud g being the upper one, the lower stud having a slot, g which forms its outer or upper part. Into and between said studs are fastened two rods, f f parallel to each other, the inner one being a smooth round rod, as is also the upper or outer one, which is also provided with a set of teeth on its upper side throughout its entire length. Between said parallel rods plays a wheel, a provided with a concave or rounded circumferential groove, as is shown by the brokenline circle on it, which fits upon the round surfaces of said rods, but plays freely between them. To the axis of said wheel is fastened a right-angled lever, E, which has its fulcrum in the pin (1, and below said pin on the longer arm of said lever is a series of teeth, 6', constructed to fit and interlock with the teeth on the said rod f, and to said fulcrum is secured a connecting-rod, d, uniting in the eye of the stud I) by means of a pin or hook, c. The longer end of said lever E passes through the slot g of the stud g g and plays freely through it, said slot thus serving as a guide for the long end of the lever E, which also forms the operating rod or handle by means of which said mechanism is operated, and which is kept moving in a vertical plane by means of its moving through the slot g and the grooved wheel 6 to which it is fastened. Below the teeth 6 said rod E is made elastic, and thereby the teeth 6 may be locked on the fixed teeth or rack on the rod f by being sprung under a hook, j, fastened to the door-frame at some distance below the slot g and in the plane of motion of the lever E. The elasticity of said rod is indicated by showing it in broken lines in its bent position in Fig. 1. The teeth of said rods may also be looked upon each other by means of a spring, h, wound around the lever E below the teeth (2, or otherwise fastened and fulcrumed on a pin, 1?, in the lever and its free end passed to the under side of the rod f, where it is so bent as to stay and slide freely on said rod while pressing on it, and to thereby draw the said teeth together into their locking position, whereby through the use of said spring h the hooked stud 7' becomes unnecessary.
A knob, is, is put on the lower end of the lever E to form a more convenient holder. By means of this construction the thrust of the connecting-rod d as well as that of the rod E is thrown upon the wheel 6", and through it the binding and friction of said parts and consequent difficulty of moving them is obviated.
WVhat I claim is- 1. In a transom-lifter, the combination, with the connecting-rod d, of the lever E, provided with roller 6" and tracks for the same, and teeth 6, and fixed teeth to receive and hold said movable teeth, substantially as specified.
2. In a transom-lifter, the combination, with the spring locking-lever E, provided with guide-roller and guide-slot and teeth 6, of the tracks for said roller, and fixed rack for said ICO teeth, and connecting-rod d, substantially as specified.
3. In a transom-lifter, the combination, with the elastic and toothed lever E, connecting- 5 rod (1, and roller 6 on said lever, of the tracks for said roller, fixed rack for said teeth, and locking device for said lever, substantially as specified.
4. In a transom-lifter, the combination, with 10 the right-angled and toothed lever E, provided with roller and connecting-rod d, and locking-spring h, of the tracks for said roller, fixed teeth to interlock with those of the rod E, and guide for said lever, substantially as specified.
