WATCH-MAK'ERS STAKI NG-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,849, dated May 21, 1889. Application filed March l, 1889. Serial No. 301,650. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GASPARD MARTEL, a citizen of Canada, and a resident of` Boston, in the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Staking-Tools, of which the following, taken in` connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in staking-tools of the kind used by jewelers for the purpose of staking or securing stais or pinions to watch-wheels and for other similar purposes, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a plan view of the improved staking-tool. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section on the line X X, shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a crosssection on the line Y Y, also shown in Fig. l; and Figs. 4 and 5 represent, respectively, in plan and elevation a modification of the invention.

The invention relates to improvements in that kind of jewelers staking-tools in Which the perforated bed-plate is stationary, and it is constructed as follows:
a is the base, to the top of which is secured the bed-plate b, which is cylindrical in form and preferably secured to the base c by means of a screw, d', and steady-pin, ct, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or in any other suitable or equivalent manner, it being only essential that the bedplate shall be firmly secured to the said base.
B B are a series of perforations oi' varying diameters in the bed-plate b, which perforations are arranged equidistant from the aXis or center of the said bed-plate, as shown, and centrally below such perforations are made through the base ct the perforations A A, as is common in staking-tools.
In one piece with or secured to the base a is made the standard or post c, the upper end of which terminates as a vertical cylinder or hub, c', having a cylindrical vertical bore or recess adapted to receive the cylindrical pin d, the axis of which coincides with the axis of the bed-plate b, as shown. On the pind is pivoted the inner end of the arm or toolguide e, that is adapted to swing on said pin in a horizontal plane. The arm c has in its outer free end a vertically-perforated toolguide, e', adapted to receive the punch or stake j', the axis of which coincides with the axis of either one of the bed-plate perforations B as the arm c is swung around the pivot-pin d.
For the purpose ofl securing the arln e to the hub c after it has been adjusted in its proper position relative to any one of the bed-plate perforations, I prefer to use an eccentiic pin or binder, g, going through horizontal perforations in the hub c and pin d and provided With a knob or handle, g', in one end and a set-screw, g, in the other to prevent its getting detached from saidhub and pin, as shown.
d is a head in the upperend of the pin d, as shown. In using the tool the staff, arbor, itc., that is to be staked is fitted in one of the perforations B corresponding in size to it and then temporarily removed therefrom. A centering punch or rod is inserted in the perforation in the ,bearing c of the adjustable arm e, and the latter is then turned around the pin d until the centering punch or rod coincides with the desired bed-plate perforation, after which the arm e is clamped and secured to the hub c by the eccentric pin or binder g and its knob or handle g. The centering punch or rod is then removed. The staff or arbor, with its wheel to be staked, is then again placed in the selected bed-plate perforation, and a punch or' stake, f, of the usual form, is placed in the cylindrical guide c and the wheel staked, as usual, by hammering on the upper end of the punch or stake j'.
It will be noticed that to adj ust the punch or stake-guide eit is only necessary to swing it on the pin d without any sliding adjustment in a lateral or vertical direction, which renders the device very simple in construction, durable, and very accurate in its operation.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown the post or standard c secured to the center of the bedplate b, the arm ebeing pivoted to a pin in its upper end in the same manner as hereinabove described, and

by securing such post centrally on the plate b, I am enabled to swing the arm e a complete revolution around its axis, thus using additional perforation's in the bed-plate.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I Wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- The stationary perforated bed-plate b and stationary base @,having thepost or standard c and vertical pivot-pin d, having its axis coinciding with that of the plate b, in combination with the stake orl punch carryingV arin e, pivoted on the pin d, and a locking device for securing said arm to the standard c after being adjusted, substantially in Aa manner i 5 and'for the purpose set forth..
