Description

raros,
T. R. HOPKINS, OF PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA.
RING-CLAMP FOR ENGB'IAVERS, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,711, dated June 29, 1858.
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation of my improved clamp for jewelers or engravers. Fig. 2, is a central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference, in each of the several figures indicate correspondingparts.
This invention is designed for jewelers and engravers use, its oflice being to hold rings during the operating of filing out, and engraving names or devices on the inner side or circumference of the same, it also answering for holding watch wheels while cutting out the open spaces between the rim and center to form the arms, and in fact serving generally as a useful simple hand tool for jewelers or engravers to use during the performance of a variety of similar operations to those above stated.
The nature of my invention consists in an adjustable spring ring clamp, which will accommodate and firmly vclamp and hold rings, wheels, etc. of different diameters or sizes, while being filed out or otherwise operated upon as will be hereinafter shown.
To enable others, skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents the stock or handle constructed with a central opening B, through it, said opening being made flaring at the inner end of the stock and split or divided so as to form oblique openings a, a', by means of a central curved shoulder or block C.
D, is an encircling spring, its circular portion being arranged outside and beyond the block C, and its ends passed through the oblique openings a, a, of the stock and fastened to the inner end of an adjustable screw rod E, as shown. The screw rod E, extends from the spring to, and a short distance beyond the outer end of the stock, and is furnished at its extremity with a screw thread 5 to which is fitted an adjusting nut F, as shown.
-From the foregoing description of parts it may be evident that if a ring, wheel, or
other circular article is placed within the circle formed by the spring D, and the block C; and the nut F, turned to the right, the ends of the spring and the rod will be drawn toward the outer end of the stock and thus the circle of the spring decreased and the spring caused to bind on all parts of the ring and thus clamp and hold it between itself and the block. T he ring being thus clamped the engraver or jeweler can file it out or engi-ave any device on its inner circumference very conveniently by holding the stock in one hand and the graver in the other.
'Io confine a larger ring or article, the nut F, is turned to the left so as to force the rod E, toward the inner end of the stock, and thus enlarge the diameter of the circle formed by the spring, sufliciently to admit the ring or article to be operated upon. -The same operation as before described is necessary to cause the spring to firmly clamp and hold the ring or other article.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable encircling spring D, arranged in the end of the stock A, C, and attached to an adjusting rod E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of my improved article of manufacture, to wit; a ring clamp for engravers or jewelers, signed by me this day of May 1858.
THos. n. HOPKINS.
