TOOL FOR CUTTING GAS-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,646, dated October 4, 1859i.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. F. HowLAND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Implement or Tool for Cutting Gas-Pipe and other Metal Tubing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a plan or top view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a side sectional view of ditto taken in the line 0c, w, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a stationary iron frame with a slot in it which terminates in a conical form at one end, in combination with a sliding aw having a V-shaped tongue with an adjustable sliding cutter, whereby the tool is readily made to answer for cutting gas-pipes of various diameters and the necessity of using a plate with a series of holes of dilferent sizes avoided.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the tool stock which may be of the usual form and provided with a permanent or stationary V-shaped jaw B, and a movable or sliding jaw C, the latter being operated by a screw D, attached to one of the handles E, at one end of the stock A. The sliding jaw O, has its sides tted on suitable guides cc, a, one at each side of the stock.
The above parts are of usual construction and in common use and therefore do not require a minute description.
F, is a handle which is at the end of the stock opposite to that where the handle E, is placed. The handle F, is attached to a screw rod G, which passes through the end of the tool stock and through a nut b, attached to a slide H. The screw thread on the rod G, does not extend into its bearing in the stock A, said rod Gr, having a smooth cylindrical surface for said bearing as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The slide H, is allowed to move freely back and forth within the stock A, and it is fitted within and works freely through the stationary jaw B. The slide H, has a hole or opening c, made longitudinally in it and the cutter I, is fitted in said opening and secured by a set screw (l, which passes transversely into the slide H, see Fig. l. The cutter I, is simply a fiat strip of steel having a cutting edge e, at each end so that either end may be used, the cutter being reversed in the slide H, whenever required.
The implement or tool is manipulated in the usual way. The pipe or tube to be cut is placed in a vise and the end of the pipe or tube where it is to be cut is grasped by the jaws B, O, the latter jaw C, being adjusted by turning the screw D. The cutter I, is adjusted by turning the screw rod G, which actuates the slide H. The stock A, is turned by hand and the cutter I, fed inward to its work by turning the handle F, as may be required.
The tool generally used for cutting gas pipes and tubing has a cutter fitted in a guide attached to the stationary aw B, and the outer end of the cutter is provided with a collar attached to a screw rod corresponding with G. The cutter therefore is directly attached to the screw rod, and cannot be detached with facility. It is expensive to manufacture and the cost of the adjustment of the cutter to the tool renders it comparatively an expensive implement.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of a stationary iron frame with a slot in it which terminates in a. conical form at one end, in combination with a sliding jaw having a Vshaped tongue and with an adjustable sliding cutter, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
