- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,330, dated May 14, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AARON F. COPPER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Hoe and Scraper, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to produce a combined hoe and scraper, to be used more particularly on barn-floors, cross-walks, &c., the same being hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device; Fig. 2, a view at the opposite side, the device being turned over; Fig. 3, a plan of the device, seen as indicated by arrow as in Fig. 1, parts being broken away and longitudinally sectioned; Fig. 4., a similar view showing a different form of connection for the blade and handle; Fig. 5, a view of the blade, seen as indicated by arrow 3 in Fig. 2, drawn to show more fully the adjustable soft edge, parts being broken away; and Fig. 6, an elevation of the device shown in Fig. 4, and seen as indicated by arrow Referring to the parts shown in the drawings, A is the blade of the implement, and B the handle, the latter having branches or braces a secured to the blade on each side of the handle. As shown in Fig. 3, the reduced end of the handle is made to pass through a central opening in the blade, there being washers c c placed one on each side of the blade, through which the handle also passes, the latter being riveted over on the outside of the outer washer. The ends of the braces a are preferably reduced in diameter and formed with shoulders g, the reduced parts being passed through holes in the blade and riveted down on the outside thereof. At the two longer edges the blade is curved longitudinally in opposite directions, so that the implement may be used as a hoe in one case, as shown in Fig. 1, and as a scraper in the other case, as shown in Fig. 2. In the first case the implement is drawn toward the user, and in the second case it is pushed from the user, as indicated by arrows. The curve of the lower part of the blade as the latter is shown in Fig. 2 is made so that the scrapingedge is about at right angles with the surface being scraped when the implement is held in the hand.

I add to the blade of the scraper an ad: justable soft edge, I), of india-rubber, leather, or similar material, and secure itto the blade by means of a clamping-strip, (Z, and screws 0. The screws pass through openings f, formed through the blade, these openings being made oblong in a direction at right angles to the edge of the blade, so that the soft edge may be adjusted to reach to a greater or less distance beyond the edge of the blade, as may be desired. These lengthened openings admit of the soft edge being carried farther down as it wears away, or raised to a distance back from the edge of the scraper out of the way entirely when it is not in use.

I prefer to make the blade of sheet-steel about seven inches wide and fourteen inches long, though the dimensions are immaterial.

In some cases the braces a may be expanded at their ends, as shown at h in Fig. 6, and be riveted down over a washer, e, on the opposite side of the blade. This gives broad supporting-shoulders on the braces for the blade. It will be understood, also, that the reduced parts of the handle, (including the braces,) that pass through the blade, may be threaded and provided with screw-nuts on the outside of the blade, instead of being riveted down, as shown.

hat I claim as my invention is A scraper consisting of a blade rectangular in form, having two of its opposite edges curved, as shown, and formed with transverse slots near one of its edges, a handle secured to the blade, a strip of soft material, a clamping-strip for said soft strip, and clampingscrews for said strips passing through said slots of ihe blade, said clamping-strip being curved longitudinally to correspond to the curvature of the opposing face of the blade, substantially as shown.
