HORACE M. YORK, OF KENNEBUNK, MAINE.
HAMIVIOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,315, dated May 14, 1889. Application filed December 26, 1888. Serial No. 294,628. (No model.)
To all whomzv may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE M. YORK, of Kennebunk, in the county of York, State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hammocks, of which the following is a description sutliciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation showing a hammock provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a side elevation, enlarged, of one ot the hooks detached; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section ot the same, and Fig. L an elevation represent-ing the hook in use.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different tigures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to means for suspending a hammock, whereby a vertical movement may be imparted thereto when in use; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the hammock, andB the hook, considered as a whole.
The body of the hook consists of a metallic cylinder formed in two sections, b d, one end of the section b being interiorly screwthreaded at f to receive the eXteriOrly-threaded end g of the companion section d, as shown in Fig. The opposite en ds or heads, h 10,01? the sections l) d are respectively provided with a central opening, fi.
lVithin the cylinder is disposed a stili coiled spring, D, the ends of said spring, respectively, passing the heads 7c h of the cylinder-sections cl b, in which they are fitted to work. Outside the `cylinder the ends of the spring are bent or curved to form hooks proper, Z m.
In the use of my' improvement a hook through an openingyc, in
the hammock A, its companion hook Zbeing disposed on a hook,`p, secured to a post, or in other convenient position. The cylinder-sections l) d are constructed of such length that when the section d is inserted in the section l) as far as possible the coil of the spring D will engage the heads 7L 7c and prevent the spring from expanding. By turning out the section d a short distance, as shown in Fig. 3, a slight action ot the spring is permitted and a corresponding vert-ical movement imparted to the hammock when occupied.
If increased movement of the hammock is desired, the sections are entirely disconnected, as shown in Fig. 4, thus permitting free action of the spring in a. manner which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters without a more explicit description.
I do not confine myself to projecting the ends of the spring D through the heads of proper, m, is detachably'secured in an end of the cylinder-sections and bending them to form hooks proper, as said hooks may be constructed of separate pieces and secured to the spring in any suitable manner.
Having thus explained my invention, what 1. The improved hammock-hook herein described, eonsisting of a cylinder formed in separable sections and a coiled spring disposed in said cylinder, the ends of said sprin projecting through the heads thereof and being bent to form hooks proper, substantially as set forth and described.
2. In a hammock-hook, the combination of a cylindrical body comprising separable sections having central openings in their heads, a coiled spring disposed in said cylinder, and hooks proper secured to the ends of said spring, and said ends projecting through and fitted to work in said opening, whereby said spring may act to impart vertical motion to the hammock -when in use, substantially as described.
