DIE FOR FORMING AUGER-HEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,296, dated May 14, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. SHALER, of Deep River, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented. a new Improvement in Dies for Formin Auger- Heads; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letter of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of the auger-head, looking toward the gouge-lip and back of the floor-lip; Fig. 2, anopposite side view looking toward the edge of the floor-lip and upon the back of the gouge-lip; Fig. 3, a face view of the head of the auger; Fig. i, the two parts of the die separated; Fig. 5, a side view of the punch; Fig. 6, a face view of the punch; Fig. '7, a longitudinal central section of the punch on line :0 0a of Fig. 6.
This invention relates to the construction of dies for the formation of double-twist augerheads, and in which one floor-lip is constructed to form a gouge, while the other floor-lip is flat. Such an anger I represent in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
A represents the fiat floor-lip; B, the spur projecting down from that lip; C, the flat portion of the other lip; D, the gouge portion of the same lip, and E the central screwpoint. The object of this construction of auger is that the gouge may cut a groove in advance of the fiat floor-lip, whereby the spur will simply have but a shaving to out instead of running through solid wood, and the chip of the floor-lip will be divided by the groove made by the gouge-lip, and so that the chips which the auger produces will be extremely small, and so as to pass freely out through the twist of the auger, and thereby avoid the friction which necessarily follows the use of an auger having plain floor-lips, or lips alike.
The object of the present invention is to construct dies which may mechanically and accurately shape the head of the auger; and it consists in the construction of dies, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.

The die F is constructed with a second rib, J, inclined corresponding to the rib I, and the face of the rib J constructed with a projection, K, of semicircular shape, which corresponds to the inside of the gouge-lip to be formed. The remainder of the rib corresponds to the shape of the twist from the gouge-lip upward. The other part, G, is constructed with a rib, L, like the rib J, but its inclination is in the opposite direction, as mentioned regarding the other ribs, I J. The under surface of this rib L at M corresponds to the inside of the floor-lip.
N, Fig. 5, represents the punch, which is of a diameter corresponding to the groove in the die, which is of cylindrical shape corresponding to the combined grooves of the two parts and so as to enter therein. The face of the punch is constructed with two projections, O P, which correspond to the under or outside of the head, as it is desired that it should come from the die. The one projection, P, has formed in its surface a cavity, R, (see Fig. 6,) which corresponds to the'gouge projection K The punch is also formed with a recess, S,in its side corresponding to the spur to be produced. The projection K on the rib J of the die, which aids in the formation of the gouge-lip, may be omitted, the cavity in the punch forming the proper exterior shape for the gouge portion of the lip, and then the interior or concave side of the gouge may be Worked out with tools.
I claim- The herein-described dies for forming the heads of angers, the said dies consisting of two parts, each part constructed with a 1011- gitudinal cylindrical groove of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the auger to be headed, the said grooves constructed With diagonal rihs I, correspomilin g to one twist of the auger back of the head, and the one part, F, constructed with a similar diagonal rib, having its face of the shape desired for the inside of the gouge-lip, the corresponding rib, L, of the other part presenting a flat face, M, upon the opposite side of the groove to the proj ection K, and a cylindrical follower having its end constructed with two projections, O P, corresponding to the face of the auger-head, the one proj cction P having a cavity, R, formed therein corresponding to the exterior surface required for the gouge-lip, and the other projection, 0, having a surface corresponding to the flat surface M of the other die.
