SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,054, dated May '7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD LEVAs- SEUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Monticello, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvem ents in Butter=Cans, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in butter-cans for the purpose of hermetically sealing butter for transportation, storage, or otherwise, and it relates particularly to means for opening the bottom end of the can when the butter is to be used, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved butter-can, a portion of which is shown in section. Fig. 2 representsa bottom View of the same, showing a portion of its binder-strip and key or lever in section; and Fig. 3 represents a detail section on the line X X shown in Fig. 1.

The end of the tongue or flap e is preferably united to the binder-strip e by means of soft solder or alloy, as shown at h in Fig. 2, so as to prevent its being accidentally ripped off while handling or transporting the can.
