J. L. ACKERMAN.
I PEN. No. 403,021. Patented May 7, 1889..
V gnu E582? [Wan 2'92 UNITED STATES seer PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER L. AOKERMAN, OF LOIVELL, INDIANA.
PEN.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,021, dated May 7, 1889 Application filed September 10, 1888. Serial No. 285,050. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JASPER L.AOKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pens.
The object is to strengthen the points of pens so as to render them more durable and prevent their losing the resiliency requisite to good writin The object is also to produce a cheap and lasting pen.
The invention consists in integrally thickening the points of junction of the body of the pen with its points, so that the latter Will not be liable to break from the former, as most usually is the case.
Figure l is a plan view of a pen embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a pen of ordinary construction, preferably of gold. At the point a, Where the slit a terminates, the pressure is greatest, and consequently after the pen has been used for any length of time the points lose their resiliency to such an extent that the pen becomes too soft to Work properly, or breaks. In order to overcome this obstacle I form the metal of the pen thicker at that point, as shown at a in Fig. 2, so as to give the points additional spring without making them too stiff for proper work. The pen thus thickened integrally inward from its slit and for a suitable distance along the meeting edges of the slit will not beliable to have its points broken off, and will also preserve its spring or resiliency much longer than a pen of ordinary construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pen re-enforced integrally or made thicker centrally for a suitable Width at a point inward from the inner end of its slit and thence outward along the meeting edges of said slit for a suitable distance, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JASPER L. AoKEEMAn.
It is hereby certified that the signature of the patentee upon the drawing in 1 Patent No. 403,021, granted May 7, 1889, for an improvement irf Pens, wa neously Written Joseph L. Ackerman, whereas said name should have been i J aspen L. Aclcerman; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this cor] therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Offic Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 11th day of June, A. D. 1889.
