' P. E. MQDONALD.
RAILWAY TICKET HOLDER. No, 402,762. Patented May, '7, 1889.,
f -jzjji UNITED STATES PETER E. MCDONALD,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO S. O. BROOKS, OF SAME PLACE.
RAILWAY-TICKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,762, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed November 26, 1887.
T0 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER E. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of IVayne, State of Michigan,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Ticket Holders; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specificationf My invention has for its objects certain new and useful improvements in railway-ticket holders, and more particularly in holders for coupon or mileage tickets, and is designed to provide a novel construction of the same, whereby the ready operation of the tickets will be greatly facilitated, their expense of manufacture diminished, and their general use rendered more satisfactory; and my invention therefore consists in the devices and appliances, together with their combination and arrangements, as more fully hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View in perspective, illustrating my invention, but in an inverted position, showing the covers opened. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the covers closed and in position for use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 4: a cross-section. Fig. 5 is a modification wherein the side margins are omitted.
I carry out my present invention as follows:
A represents a continuous coupon or mileage ticket of any desired construction, preferably divided laterally by parallel lines to indicate the mileage, and designed to have the desired number of miles traveled torn off from the ticket laterally.
B represents a ticket-holder of improved construction, preferably consisting of folding covers B B The ticket is engaged with one of the covers, as B, which may be provided with raised longitudinal margins 19 b, to more effectually embrace the ticket, although these said margins may be omitted, if preferred, without departing from my invention. The said cover, with which the ticket is engaged,
Serial No. 256,204. (No model.)
the ticketnnay be forced outward. At the same time I construct a suitable orifice, 19 in ,the face of the cover, to permit the thumb being pressed upon the ticket and the underlying shoulder b which is made sufficiently broad to serve this purpose. The ticket being thus located between the shoulder and the face of the cover, the end of the ticket is held in place in a neat and satisfactory manner, and
by a suitable movement of the thumb the ticket may readily be projected from the end of the'holder or be retracted, as may be desired. To facilitate this operation and render the orifice at b more free for this purpose, a thin block of paper-board or other suitable material may be interposed between the margin and the cover at the ends of the orifice, as at 6 so as to widen the orifice sufficiently to permit the free and easy movement of the ticket. So also, if desired, suitable fasteners, b, may be employed to more firmly hold the cover and its margin in place and prevent their separation at the ends of the orifice.
The ticket may be thus run outward from the holder the desired distance and then torn off alongthe edge of the holder, the thumb, resting upon the ticket, holding it firmly at any desired point for this purpose. The ticket is thus moved through the orifice b from the end of the holder and in line with the under side of the cover.
Any fastening device may be employed to hold the covers together, as a rubber band, C.
A sheet of paper or other fabric, D, may or may not be employed, as preferred, to hold the inner ends of the layers upon the cover by being engaged thereupon and upon the cover, forming a pocket for the inner ends of the layers.
While I have described my improved ticket as a railway or mileage ticket, yet it is evident that it may be used as a coupon-ticket for other purposes, if desired, all coming within the scope of my invention, as for street-car, ferry, base-ball tickets, and the like.
The margin 5 and the adjacent cover with which it is engaged, it will be seen, constitute a loop embracing the ticket to hold it in proper adjustment when being operated. At the same time, when the holder is in the pocket, the end of the ticket is effectually protected, and is also in position for instant projection from the holder without any necessity of opening the covers.
hat I claim is 1. A ticket-holder having a continuous coupon ticket in combination therewith, said holder provided with an orifice through which said ticket may be projected, and constructed to permit a bearing of the thumb upon said ticket to operate said ticket, substantially as described.
2. A ticket-holder having a continuous coupon-ticket in combination therewith, said holder provided with an orifice through which said ticket may be projected, and a margin, b abutting against the ticket, said holder constructed to permit a bearing of the thumb upon the ticket to operate the ticket, substantially as set forth.
3. Aticket-holder having a continuous coupon-ticket in combination therewith, said holder constructed with covers embracing the ticket, one of said covers provided with an orifice through which the ticket may be projected, substantially as set forth.
4. A ticket holder having in combination therewith a continuous coupon-ticket, said holder consisting of covers embracing said ticket, one of said covers provided with an orifice through which the ticket may be projccted from the end of the holder in line with the under face of said cover, substantially as described.
5. A ticket-holder having in combination therewith a coupon-ticket, said holder constructed of covers embracing said ticket, one of said covers provided with an end margin, b and with an orifice between said margin and the under face of the cover through which the ticket may be projected, substantially as set forth.
6. A ticket-holder having in combination therewith a coupon-ticket, said holder constructed of covers to embrace the ticket, one of said covers provided with an end margin, 17 an orifice between the said margin and its cover, and an orifice in the face of the cover through which the thumb may bear upon the ticket to operate the same, substantially as set forth.
7. The combinatiomwith the holder, of the continuous coupon-ticket, said holder constructed of covers embracing said ticket, one of said covers provided with a loop through which the ticket may be projected, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with a casing, of the covers 13' 13 one of which is provided with longitudinal raised margins b b and with the end margin, and the other with an aperture, I), of a continuous flexible coupon-ticket secured at one end to one of the said covers and adapted to be projected with its opposite end through a slot, as 12 formed at the end of said cover, the said ticket being entirely inclosed Within said casing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
