BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,591, dated May *7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD HASSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Shafting-Buckle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in shafting-buckles, and its object is to provide a buckle which willallow the shaft-bearer to pass through and be secured thereto in a straight line, thereby decreasing the wear upon and the tendency of the stitching in the shaft-bearer to rip also, to provide a means for securing the tuck to the buckle in such a manner as to increase the thickness of the tuck at the point where the wear is the greatest; and to this end my invention consists of certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter more fully described in the following specification, and distinctly pointed out in the claim at the close thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal sectionof my improved buckle secured to a shaft-bearer.

In the drawings, A'Vrepresents the shaftbearer, B the buckle, and O the tuck. The buckle consistsof the side pieces, a a, having upturned ends connected by the crosspieces I) b, forming a loop at each end. On the side pieces, 00 a, are formed downwardlyprojecting ears 0 0, connected by a crossbar, cl. The side pieces, a a, are also provided intermediate the cross-bar cl and the ends b b with two cross-bars, e and f, the bare of which is provided with a perpendicular post,

I g, forming a tongue for passing through the shaft-tuck thereto.

I eyelet in the shaft-bearer, and the cross-bar f is provided with a rivet-hole, h. The tuck is formed of a single piece of leather or other suitable material folded upon itself at its central point to form a loop, 2', which passes around the cross-bar d. The strap is then bent in the form of a loop, and the ends jj thereof are passed up over the cross-bar (1, so as to pass the rivet-hole h in the cross-bar f, thereby presenting four thicknesses of leather at the point of the rivet-hole h, where they are riveted to the buckle by a rivet, k, which passes through the buckle and the four thicknesses of leather. It will thus be seen that by this construction three thicknesses of leather bear upon the crossbar d.

I am aware that harness-buckles have been constructed with a stationary post or tongue for passing through the eyelet in the shaftbearer and with downwardly=projecting eyes connected by a cross-bar for attaching the I therefore do not claim such construction; but

In a harness-buckle, the combination, with the straight side bars having upturned ends provided with cross-bars forming loops, of a downwardlyprojecting car at the central point of each side bar, said ears being connected by a cross-bar, d, and two cross bars, e and f, connecting the side bars at points intermediate the crossbar d (or central loop) and the end loops, one of said cross-bars being provided with a post and the other with a pivot-hole, substantially as described.
