* UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSELMSOHMIT", OF BUFFALO, NElV YORK.
S-MOOTHING AND SAD IRON HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,197,-dated April 30, 1889.
Application filed February 8, 1889- To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, ANSELM ScHMITT, of Butfalo,in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Laundry and Tailor Smoothing and Sad Iron Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, formsa full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to laundry and tailor stoves for heating sad and smoothing irons; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved laundry and tailors stove. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, portions thereof being in section in line 00 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3
- is a sectional plan below the line 31 y of Figs.
l and 2.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
The object of my present invention is the production of an efficient stove for heating flat and smoothing irons for laundry and tailors use.' To accomplish this object I construct this stove essentially of a base, A, having the usual ash-pit for the reception of the ash-pan B, said base being provided with a door, 0, having a sliding register, D, of the well-known construction to admit air to the sliding and rocking grate E, operated by the handle F, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. Above the base A is located the firepot G, lined in its interior with fire-bricks, H, while above the fire-pot there is the flaring middle piece, I, having a chute, J, provided with a suitable cover, j, through which chute coal is fed to the fire-pot G in an obvious manner. The flaring middle piece is covered by a plate, K, having in front and on both corners openings 70, serving as passages for the hot gases of combustion from the fire-pot to the chimney, as hereinafter to be referred to. The plate K is provided on its under side Serial No. 299,145. (No model.)
with ribs L to stiffen the same, and thereby prevent its deflecting or sagging when hot. Instead of ribs I may, however, use a series of pipes opening in front of the middle piece and terminating in bends L in the rear, whereby a current of air may pass through said pipes, and thereby keep the same at a temperature low enough to prevent their bending, and.
thereby, furthermore, sustaining said plate K in a fiat condition, which it would not be able to preserve were the plate unsupported, owing to the intense heat to which it is subjected. Upon the plate K, I locate a U shaped top, M, having doublewalls, so as to produce therein spaces N N N, the two former being the side spaces and the latter an end duct, there being in the side spaces partitions O, producing ducts P P, which convey the gases of combustion passing through the openings 70 70' into the back or end duct, N, from whence they escape through an opening, Q, in the outer rear wall of the top into the flue R, having on its top the stove-pipe S in the regular and wellknown manner.
The front of the U-shaped top M is closed by a curved cover, T, hinged or otherwise at tached to the top M at m in any desirable manner.
The irons to be heated are placed upon the top K and the door or cover T closed, when the said plate K will soon transmit heat to the irons and bring them to a serviceable condition.
To prevent this laundry-stove from emitting heat in the warmer seasons of the year,
I first place into the interior of the fire-pot G between the iron thereof and the fire-brick an asbestus lining, I, which will intercept the heat rays and prevent them from reaching the outer iron shell of the fire-pot. In a like manner I shall line. the sides of the top with asbestus sheeting, (not shown,) so that this heater may be readily used in the summer time without making its presence uncomfortably felt to the laundress or tailor.
The efliciency of this heater is attained by the peculiar construction of the plate K and the ducts in the top M, causing the heated gases to be concentrated below the said plate 7 in the middle portion, I, and then to pass forward through the openings in said plate- In this manner the plate is-always kept intensely hot and in the best condition to transmit heat to the flat or sl'noothing irons placed upon the same.
In the inner back Wall of the top )1, I locate a ventilator, U, to allow the hot air in the in terior of said top to escape into the back flue, while in the said back flue I locate a further ventilator, V, to act as a damper and to regulate the draft of the fire.
To convert this heater into a stove for general heating purposes in addition to its predesigned purpose, I remove the top M and substitute in place thereof one having no asbestus lining (such a stove being, in fact, shown in the drawings) but being otherwise constructed as described, so that all the plates and surfaces become radiators, and thereby attain the result desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a laundry and tailor stove for heating flat and smoothing irons, consisting, essentially, of the base having the grate, the fire-pot, the flaring i middle piece having the chute and cover, the l plate having the side openings, and the top having the side and back fines, and the hinged l cover, as and for the purpose set forth.
: and arranged in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANSELM SCHMI'PT.
