Be 1t known that I, JOSEPH P. M. EARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing atPolk,
, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio,
forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a pump embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse sectional View of the same, taken on the Iine fr of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4is an enlarged. detail sectional View of the plunger.
A represents the outer cylinder, which is of suitable length and diameter, and is provided with external screw-threads at its upper and lower ends.
B represents a cap, which is substantially semi-.spherical in shape, and is provided at its lower edge with a depending internallythreaded iiange, C, which is adapted to be screwed to the upper end of cylinder A. An annular shoulder, D, is formed on the inner side of the cap, at the upper side of said iiange.
E represents a circular ring or plate having a large central opening, F, and provided with a series of small radial openings, G, between said opening F and its perimeter. On the upper side of the said ringEis placed a valvering, IVI, of similar size and shape,whieh valvering is made of leather" or other suitable inaterial. The said valve-ring and plate E are secured on the upper edge of cylinder A, between the saine and the shoulder D of cap B, the said valve-ring being `on the upper side of the ring or plate E and normally closing the openings G thereof.
I represents anv inner cylinder, the diameter of which is less than the diameter of the cylinder A. in the center of cylinder A, and has its upper end screwed into the central opening, F, of the ring E. The lower end of the cylinder I is also provided with screw-threads.

P represents a lower cap, which is similar in size-and shape to the upper cap, B, and is screwed to the lower end of the cylinder A.

The upper cap, B, has a central opening in whichv is screwed the lower end of a pipe, V. The upper end of the said pipe V is provided with a discharge-spout, W, and has a link, X, to which link is fulcrumed a lever, Y. To the inner end of the said lever is pivoted the upper end of rod Z, and the lower end of the said rod connects with the upper end of a tubular rod or pipe, A which eX- tends downward into the inner cylinder and is provided near its upper end with an opening, B', which communicates with a pipe, V.

On opposite sides of the cavity f, and communicating with the same, are openings or channels g and I. The said opening or channel g is on a lower plane than the opening l, and the latter communicates with the channel b. The valve 7L is adapted to be moved against the opening g and l, so as to close one and open the other at the same instant.

Arranged between the opposing sides of the sections a and m are a pair of leather packing or cylinder rings, s, which have their outer edges turned upward and downward, as shown, and thereby adapted to iit snugly against the inner side of cylinder I.

By operating the pump-lever the plunger may be caused to reciprocate vertically in the cylinder I.
The operation of my invention is as follows: On the upstroke of the plunger the valve 71y closes against the opening g, and thereby cuts off communication between the hollow rod A and the lower portion of the cylinder I. The pressure of the air in the upper portion of said cylinder I closes the valve 71, and a partial vacuum is formed in the lower portion of cylinders I and A, which causes the valves S U K to open, and thereby water is sucked into the lower end of said cylinders I and A. A portion of this waterpasses up through the annular space between said cylinder and finds its way through the valve-ring E into the upper portion of cylinder I, and is compressed by the upward movement of the plunger and forced upward thereby through the opening d Z and cavity f into the hollow rod A', and from the latter into the lower portion of the delivery-pipe V. The valves Il, K, U, and S close by their own gravity and by the pressure of the su perincumbent water when the plunger reaches the upper limit of its movement, and on the E ensuing downstroke of the plunger the valve g t' closes against the opening l, thereby opening communication between the lower portion of the inner cylinder and the tubular rod A. l A partial vacuum is formed in the upper portion of the cylinder I, which causes water from the cylinder A to be sucked into the upper portion of cylinder I through the valve plate or ring E and past the valve Il, and the water in the lower portion of cylinder I becomes compressed by the descent of the plunger, thereby keeping the valve K closed, and the water in the lower portion of cylinder I is 4 thus forced upward through the hollow rod i A into the delivery-pipe V.
From the foregoing description it will be E understood that the plunger both sucks and forces water at each stroke, whether up or down, and consequently a continuous stream l of water is discharged from the spout of the l discharge-pipe when the pump is in operation. Having thus described my invention, I

In a pump, the combination of the outer cylinder, the cap secured to the upper end of the same, the ring E, and the valve-ring D, clamped between the cap and the outer cylinder, the inner cylinder secured to the ring E, the valve-ring K at the lower end of the inner cylinder, the plate L, the collar N, secured to the lower end of the inner cylinder and clamping the plate L and ring K against the inner cylinder, and the plunger reciprocating in said inner cylinder, as specified.
