Description
W.W.'Eon1NsoN,--0E
.PATENT OFFICE.
RIPON, WISCONSIN'.
IM PROV'EMNT lN GATE-CATCH ES. n
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40.187, dated October 6, 1863.
, To all 'whom lit may concern:
Be it known that I, W. W. ROBINSON, of Iipornin the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented cert-ain new andA useful Improvements in` GatefGatches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the s'ame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, invwhich;
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the catch and'latch, together jwith sections of the post and-gate. Fig. 2f represents a longitudinal vertical sectionthrough the catch and late hlof -the gate; Figsjfrepresents V:a1-frontview of the catch. s Similar letters'of reference. where 'they oc eur denotel like parts vini-tile several figures.
1 To enable others 'skilledinj the? art'to-x'nake and use my invention, I-.will proceed to describe Iits construction and operation.
A represents the gate-post.
B represents part of the gate closin g against the post A.
C represents the catches,v(their exact shape is represented in Fig. 3,) each being in the f snape of a truncated sector of a circle. They arepivoted and hung-between the catch-'plates a. b by means4 of bolts or pins c, which 'pass through the plates 'a br and are secured to the.
post A. The catches C have free play between the plates a b, and said platesare prevented froinchokiug them by a suitable neck -on .the
bon-.senr by providing the nl rarwith s1ee\es` which surround the ,.bo1ts`, and on which-the,k catches are hung. The catches O are pre-1 'vented'fron'i dropping-beyond a: certain point by the projections g,.which' are secured-to the' plate ra-Sand which extendglntothe spaceshinfthe-catches-G.' f A 'fDrepresents the gatelatch.. -eIt-'isSecured.
The latch is pivoted at f to the gate', and is retained. in its position by the. action of the springp, which presses against the vertical prongE. The part m of the latch whcheoi'nes in contact with the'catches has oblique sides,l .as represented in Fig. 3. be opened, the lever' of the latch D is lpressed down to the, position represented in red lines,
When the gate is to Fig. 2, and the part on will clear the catches and the gate may be opened. 0n releasing the latch-.D the spring pwill restore it to its rst posi-tien, and when the gate is elosed, the part moi' the latch D will strike the lower edge, 2,' of the catch C, raise the latter to the position represented in redlipes in -]i`ig.3,v and strike the curved' edge 3 of the opposite catch. Thel raised catch will then descend by its own weight and both catches willlock the latch efectually between them.
- Thev great advantages of the catches C is vthat they are very simple in their construction andthat they are not liable 'to get out of order, as they are selioperating and asno .spring is required in theiroperation, which may rust'or by hard use may become inoperative. Havingthus fully described thevnature of my. invention, what I claim herein as new, and desire to secure `bylietters Patent, is`
In.coinbin atiouwith the double catches C, the springla'tch D; when constructed and operated-substantiallyin the manner and for thepliitpose set-forth.
A.C. NYE,
