Description

(No Model.) Q
- N. VERMEHREN.
RULER.
Patented Apr. 16, 1889.
UNITED 4 STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
NICOLAI VERMEHREN, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,392, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed December 11 1888. Serial No. 293,276. (No model.) Patented in Norway November 16, 1887, No. 582, and in Sweden December 9, 1887,1510. 1,165.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NICOLAI VERMEHREN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Copenhagen, inthe Kingdom of Denmark,
have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Rulers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it I0 appertains to make and use the same.
My invention (for which I have obtained a patent in Sweden, No. 1,165, of December 9, 1887, for fifteen years running from July 5, 1887, and in Norway, No. 582, of November 15 16, 1887, for fifteen years running from July 8, 1887) relates to rulers,-by which a horizontal plate is provided on each side with another horizontal but narrower plate, whereby this the middle plate, which is the real ruler, is projecting about one-half inch from the other plates, thus forming an edge along which the pen is drawn.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 gives a side view, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of the ruler.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The ruler consists of a right-angled piece, M, of metal plate, porcelain, glass, or other material, with rounded corners. This plate or disk is the real ruler, but has on both sides fiat pieces of wood, H H, which are fastened to M by screws S or in any other suitable manner. The wood coverings serve the purpose of keeping the proper ruler, M, at such distance from the material on which one works that this cannot be brought in contact with the fluid which may adhere to M from a pen or other appliance. In order to effect this the ruler M projects a suitable distancesay one-half inch-beyond the wooden covering, and is to both sides perfectly horizontal, so that it can neither make nor lead the ink or other fluid which might adhere to the ruler to collect on the edge and from there drip onto the paper nor toward the middle in the direction of the wooden covering. The ruler will thus prevent any spilling of ink on the paper.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A ruler consisting of a right-angled plate or disk, M, furnished on both sides with narrower plates, H and H. r
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
