POCKET-BOOK.
S2EGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,219, dated April 9, 1889. Application filed February 28, 1889. Eerial No. 301,454. (No model.)
T or whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST SCHNOPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at East New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in PockeeBooks and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in such articles, for example, as pocket-books,
1o purses, bags, and satchels, and by means of this invention the contents are secured again st spilling or falling out while the article is open, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pocketbook. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a gusset or flap.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letters A A indicate frames or jaws of a pocket-book. Said jaws are jointed at B, and a catch, 1), can be applied to hold the jaws closed. The bag portion or body portion E of the article is secured below said jaws. lVhen the jaws are opened wide for the purpose of extracting such articles as coins from the bag portion E, some of the coins are apt to spill or fall out 0 at the sides of the jaws. To prevent such spilling, flaps or gussets F are secured above the jaws. When the jaws are opened, said gussets are spread or extended above the sides of the jaws, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, thus preventing objects from spilling or fall- 3 5 ing out at the sides of the jaws. When the jaws are closed, the flaps F fold into the j ws,
so as to be out of sight and to be protected against injury.
The gussets or flaps F can be made in va- 4o rious waysas, for example, of pliable material, such, for example, as leather, rubber, or cloth, or of pieces of brass or sheet metal suitably jointed or hinged to one another. In the drawings the flaps are shown as having folds 5 or joints G, so that said flaps can readily fold into the bag portion E when the jaws A are closed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination, with the jaws, of a bagor body secured below the jaws and gussets or flaps extending above said jaws when the bag is open and folding between the same when the jaws are closed, substantially as described. 5 5
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing wite nesses.
ERNST SCHNOPP.
