FFICEQ \VILLIAM BAPTIST, OF NEIV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
DEVICE FOR HANDLING LOGS AND TIMBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,728, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed November 25, 1887. Serial No. 256,169. (No model.) I
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAPTIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hauling Logs and Timber; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for handling logs and timber in such places, for instance, as along a riverbank and marshy places where it is desirable to form the same into rafts for transportation; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the amended drawings, Figure 1 represents a log with my improvements attached, showing the same as being drawn by means of the drum with ropes, &c. Figs. 2, 3, and a are views of the clutch-disks employed on the drum. Fig. 5 is a view of the shiftinglever of the clutch. Fig. 6 is a view of a portion of a log with my improvements attached, and Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the log in section. Fig. 8 is a view of the two bolts, which I drive into the log. Fig. 9 is a view of the clevis and its pin, which I secure to the bolts; and Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the cone with which I cap the log.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates a winding-drum, which I preferably employ in hauling the logs in connection with a chain or rope. This drumis suitably journaled in standards, which may be mounted on the deck of a boat, tug, or the like and rotated by any suitable means. At one end of the drum I provide a clutch for throwing the device in and out of operation. This clutch comprises a disk, B, which is grooved to receive a shifting-lever, and has on its inner side lugs a, which are adapted to receive correspondingly-shaped grooves b on a larger disk, 0, or on the end, of the winding-drum.
This apparatus which I have shown for drawing logs may be varied in construction or other suitable apparatus employed.
D indicates the bolts, which are driven at a suitable interval into the end of the log to be drawn. These bolts are preferably of an angular form or have their entering ends flaring with respect to each other to insure a more firm hold in the log, and are provided at their outer ends with eyes d, by which a clevis, E, is connected therewith by means of its pin F.
G indicates a hollow cone, which is provided at its reduced end with an aperture for the passage of a chain, as shown. The chain H, which passes through the cone, is provided at opposite ends with a hook, one end of which is designed to engage the clevis secured to the end of the log and the opposite one for attachment to the drawing rope or chain. It will thus be seen that the cone caps the forward end of the log to be drawn and during operation eases its draft by preventing it from plowing unnecessarily deep into the earth.
I do not wish to be confined to the precise construction of parts herein shown, as it is obvious that many of the parts may be changed in form without departing from the spirit of the invention, as it is only necessary after the bolts have been driven into the end of a log to provide a suitable clevis for the attachment o the draft-chain, and one which will permit the cone to be placed thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim isb An apparatus for handling logs, comprising bolts to be driven into the end of a log, a clevis attached to [he said bolts, a cone for the end of the log, and a chain, all adapted to be used in connection with a winding-drum, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
