UNITED f STATES PATENT EEICE.
WILLIAM L. PAINE, oE ARGENTA, ARKANSAS.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,478, dated April 2, 1889.
Application led T une 6, 1888 Serial No. 276,288. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. PAINE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Argenta, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking- Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom-- panying drawings.
My invention relates to rocking chairs which are provided with means to retain them in a fixed position at any desired inclination, or permit them to be rocked; and the objects of my improvement are to provide simple and inexpensive 'means adapted to be attached to rocking-chairs already constructed or in use to convert them at will into reclining-chairs. l attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a rockingchair having` an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a, perspective view of a rocking-chair having said attachment slightly modified in form. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment shown in Fig. l,with a pivoted guide forthe operatingarm.
In vsaid drawings, A represents a rockingchair of ordinary construction, having rear legs, A2, front legs, A3, and rockers A4, resting upon the floor. To keep the front part of said y rockers elevated, and consequently the seat and back inclined rearwardly, a lever, B, is pivotally connected to the front leg by means of a screw or bolt, c, and has its rear portion resting upon or in engagement with'the teeth of a rack, D, secured to the side of the rear leg of the chair. This lever B 'is provided with an arm, B2, which. may be formed. integral with said lever, as shown in Fig. 2; but it is preferably connected therewit-h by means of a loose joint, b2, as shown in Fig. l. If said arm is loosely jointed at its upper end, its
lower end is guided by passing it through a f B to spring into engagement with the teeth of the rack, the portion of said lever adjacent to its pivot c extends sufficiently forward of said pivot at b to present a bearing-point for said lever against the side ol' the leg of the chair to resist the accidental disengagement of said lever from the rack, and cause said lever to have sufficient resilience to maintain it in engagement until forcibly removed therefrom by the person using it. This attachment can be secured to either one of the sides, or to both sides, of the rocking-chair and permit it to be transformed temporarily into an easy or reclining chair. It can also be attached to an Ordinary chair to cause it to remain tilted on the rear legs thereof.
In Fig. 3 the guide c for the arm B2 is at the end of a movable lever, E, pivoted at e2 to the rocker to bring the lower end of said arm B2 slightly nearer to the bearing-point. of said rocker upon the door, and thereby reduce the numberof notches over which the lever B needs to be depressed to tip back the chair.
Having now fully described my invention, I claiml. In combination with the front and rear legs of a rocking-chair and a rack secured to said rear legs,a lever pivoted to the front leg and having its rear end in engagement with said rack, and an arm attached to said lever and having its lower end adapted to rest upon the supporting-floor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Y 2. In combination with the front and rear legs of a chair and a rack secured to said rear legs, a lever pivoted to the front leg and having its rear end in engagement with said rack, and an arm pendent from said lever and bearing against the chair-support, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM Il. PAINE.
