FOLDING BATH-TU B.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,119, dated March 26, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RANSOM SABIN, of Shelby, in the county of Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Folding Bath-Tub, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to secure a bath-tub which may be folded in small bulk when not in actual use and during transportation and storage, and the parts of which may be readily and conveniently brought into position for use, and after use folded again as readily and conveniently.

The invention will be first described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is an elevation of one of the sides of my bath-tub with the legs thereof in the folded position. Fig. 2 is a plan View of my bath-tub, showing the parts in the folded position. Fig.3 is a side elevation thereof with the parts in the position they occupy when the tub is ready for use. Fig. 4 is an end elevation taken when the parts occupy a position similar to the parts of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a section taken on the plane of the line so 00, Fig. 3.

In the drawings, 1 1 represent the sides of the bath-tub, which are alike, and may be made of wood or metal, or wood or other material and metal combined. The ends of the bath-tub are alike, and are composed of two parts, 2 2, of equal dimensions, hinged together at their inner edges by the hinges 3 3, and at their outer edges hinged to the sides 1 1 by hinges 4. 4. These ends 2 2 I prefer to make of thin sheet metal; but wood or other material may be used. A bolt, 15, is located on one of the parts 2 and a socket 011 the other part, so that they may be locked in the open position.

With each of the sides 2 2 I combine a pair of folding legs, 5 5. Each of the legs being constructed to operate in a similar manner, a description of one will suflice for all. Each leg is constructed to fold by securing it upon a pivot, 6, fixed upon the side,

To the side and end pieces I secure in any convenient manner a flexible sheet, 10, of some material impervious to wateras, for instance, rubber-of dimensions sufficient, when in place, to provide ample space for the purposes of a bath. I also provide a strap, 11, for the purpose of dividing the flexible sheet 10 into two small compartments for the use of a child or young person. This strap 11 runs under the flexible sheet 10, and its ends may be brought up and united by a buckle, as shown in Fig. 2. It is obvious that when this strap 11 is drawn into nearly a horizontal position the flexible sheet will be drawn up with it, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, and thereby the compartments 12 13 will be formed. The strap 14. is similar in construction and operation to the strap 12, only located at the other end of the tub.

A head-strap may be provided extending from side to side, so that a bather may have a rest for the head while bathing.

The manner of operating my improved bathtub will be obvious from the foregoing description of its parts.

This bath-tub will be foundto be light in weight, portable, economical of house-space when desired, capable of reduction of bulk during transportation and storage, and economical in cost of construction.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A folding bath-tub consisting in two parallel side bars, 1, having sockets 8 8 near their opposite ends, and latches 7 pivoted in front of the open sides of said sockets, the legs 5 5, pivoted between their ends to the side bars below the sockets, the upper ends of the legs entering the sockets when swung and the Water-proof sheet 10, substantially as into Vertical position, and having notches to set forth.
