PACKAGE OF FLY-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,035, dated March 26, 1889. i Application filed January 24, 1888l Serial No. 261,791. (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. BAKER, of Chicago, county of Oook,and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages of Fly Paper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The obj ect of this invention is to provide a means or device for compressing or binding together the several sheets composing a package of fly-paper, so as to prevent the coniposition spread over the surface from being expressed between the edges and the merchantable quality of the goods'destroyed.
Figure l is a plan or face view of a sheet of fly-paper; and Fig. 2, a package of the same, which embodies my improvement. Fig. 3 is a view of the binding-clamp.
In the drawings, A represents a sheet of flypaper, the dark or shaded surface a representing the sticky coating or composition applied to the same.
In preparing the Iiy-paper the mixture is applied to one side of the sheet only, and is spread over so as to leave the clean marginal space a between the border of the composition and the edge of the paper, as shown in Fig. 1. After the sticky composition has been applied the sheet is folded over upon itself along the line l) with the sticky surface inside.
In packing the paper for storage or shipment a number of sheets are laid one on top of the other, to form a package, B, such as is shown in Fig. 2. These packages are of a convenient size for the retail trade, and a number of them are usually placed in the same box or shipping-case.
Un der ordinary circumstances it was found that the composition would be expressed or ooze out between the edges and cause the different shcets to adhere or stick together, thus damaging the goods and resulting in a complete loss to the producer. The principal object of this improvement is therefore to prevent this class of goods from being damaged in the manner set forth. This I accomplish by the use of the spring-clamp C, which is of the form shown in Fig. 3. This clamping device is composed of a single piece of spring- Wire, and consists of the double end bars, d d d d', and the double side bars, cl2 d2, running at right angles to the end bars.
The clamp or binder C is applied to the package in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the respective parallel bars coming opposite each other on opposite sides of the package, the line of pressure being confined to a point between the border of the composition and the edge of the paper, thus preventing the coating from oozing out or being expressed between the open edges. The clamp has a bearing along the ends and front sides, the backs formed in folding the leaves resting against the bent-around parts (Z3 cl3 of the clamp, as shown in Fig. 2.
The terminal ends of the wire composing the clamp may lap past each other and be Wired together, as shown, or secured in any other suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a package of iiy-paper, of a springclamp consisting of the double end bars, d d d d', and the side bars, d2 d2, running at right angles thereto, the end bars being bent to pass around the back of the package, whereby the same is compressed from both sides on a line between the border of the composition and the edge of the paper, the
terminal ends of said spring overlapping and being wired together, asshown, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
