UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICIIAEL E. VELSI-I, CF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
CANOPY-TABLE FOR UNDERTAKERS USE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 400,024, dated March 19, 1889. Application filed June 2l, 1888. Serial No. 277,789. (No model.)
T9 all whom, t may concern/ o Be it known that I, MICHAEL E. VELSH, of Chelsea, County of Suolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Canopy-Tables for Undertakers Use, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its obj eet to provide a novel canopy-table for use by undertakers.
The dead are commonly laid out upon tables and subsequently placed in eoflins of greater or less oost, and at the present time the most expensive eo'ffins are covered with broadeloth. In aeeordanoe with my invention the bodyis laid upon a table, which may be the usual preparatory table, and is dressed in any desired or usual manner, and to this table is applied, upon suitable legs or standards, a top plate shaped preferably like a oofiintop, and then this top and the table are draped with cloth to resemble a cloth-covered eoiiin resting on a draped table. At the desired time the body may be removed into a coffin of greater or less oost, as may be desired. The top is jointed, so that it may be readily folded for Convenience of transportation, and preferably the legs supporting the top are also hinged to be folded into the top.
The invention Consists in an undertakers table simulating a eanopied casket, in which the top is made as a ooiiin or casket top in two parts hinged together, and one part made transparent, and folding legs hinged to said top, and depending draperies att-ached to said top to form the sides of the Casket, as hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
Figure l in side elevation, partially broken out, represents a Canopy-table embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view with the drapery omitted. Fig. 3 is a detail of the under side of the top, showing the Central hinges; and Fig. e is a sectional detail showing one of the hinged legs or standards.
The body portion A A of the table, hinged together at A2, has, as shown, folding crossed legs B B', the portion A having a netting or bottom, a, while the portion A has a bottom portion, d', hinged to a cross-piece, d2, so as to be tipped more or less to give to the body the desired position. The table at its four oorners reeeives four legs or standards, c c, eaoh hinged or pivoted, as at o', to the under side of the top plate or oover, C C preferably made in two parts and hinged together at c2, one part, C', being left open for the reception of a glass, at c3, to enable the body to be seen below. The table portion A A is concealed by drapery D, while suspended from the top plate or Canopy is the drapery D', the latter by its fringe covering the upper part of the drapery D, as at the left of Fig. l. y
For Convenience of the undertaker, both the top plate and table are jointed centrally, so that they may be folded into eompaet spaee and be readily moved from plaoe to plaoe as and when needed.
My improved canopy-table, which with its drapery ean be used over and over again, results in economy in funeral expenses.
I claim- An undertakers table made to resemble a eanopied casket and composed of the hinged and movable top plate, one portion of which is provided with a glass and having legs or supports hinged to said top plate, and draperies adapted to be attached to the top plate to form the sides of the casket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subseribing witnesses.
MICI-IAEL E. VELSII.
