SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,964, dated March 19, 1889.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, LAURENCE V. BENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Separable Hinges, of which the following is a speciication.

My invention consists of a hinge adapted to chests and packing-cases where it is desired that the cover may be firmly retained in place when the chest is closed and entirely removed when the chest is to be uncovered. Between the angle at which the entire removal of the cover is effected and its closing the hinge acts in the usual way of holding the cover to the chest. Provision is also made for holding` the hinge together when the cover is thrown back, if it is desired, while not interfering with its removal.

My hinge is constructed of two plates or leaves attachable to the cover and wall of the chest, respectively, in any well-known way. One leaf consists of a shank, to the extremity of which is attached the pin, in form substantially that of a T, in which the cross-piece is the pin and the leg the shank of this part of the hinge. The other leaf carries two C- shaped knuckles attached thereto, the space between each knuckle being sufficient to admit of the passage between them of the shank of the T-piece, and the breadth of the mouth of the knuckle substantially that of the shorter diameter of the pin, so that the latter may be inserted therein. The T-piece is then attached to the cover of the chest and the knuckle-piece fastened to the Wall of the chest with the mouths of the knuckles turned away from the cover. The T-piece is now inserted between the knuckles, the pin engaging with the latter, and the cover then closed, in which position it is held firmly in place by the hinge. On opening the cover the pin turns in the knuckles until the weight of the cover causes it to fall free of the knuckles, and the leaves of the hinge become disengaged.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a view in perspective of the hinge disengaged, showing its differents parts. Fig. 2 is a view of a closed chest, showing the hinge without the stud I. Fig. 3 is a View of an open chest with the hinge attached, showing the cover supported by the stud I.

H I-I are the knuckles, out away at 7L 7L, so as to admit of the passage of pin F, and I is a supporting-stud for the open cover. Stud I is placed midway between knuckles H I-I and far enough below them on leaf G to allow of the insertion and withdrawal of the shank and pin when desired. It acts as a support for the cover, holding the pin and knuckles in engagement when the cover is open, as shown in Fig. 3, butin no way interferes with the removal of the cover, if required. Shank E is shown as attached to the edge of the cover in Fig. 2, and as bent at right angles and secured to the under side of the cover in Fig. 3; but the manner in which it is secured to the cover forms no part of my invention.

By spreading the base of the knuckles where they join the leaf, as shown in Figs. l and 2, greater strength is secured, yand the sides of the knuckles serve as guides to grasp the shank of the T-piece, greatly increasing the stability of the cover and preventing it from wabbling.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a separable hinge, the combination, with the T-shaped leaf D, having' the pin F, of the leaf G, the knuckles I-I II, projecting from the face of and curved downward and back to the leaf G, leaving sufficient space between the ends of the knuckles and the leaf for the admission of the pin F, and having enlarged bases with the inner sides per pendicular to the leaf G, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a separable hinge, the combination, with the T-shaped leaf D, having the pin F, of the leaf G, having the curved downwardprojecting knuckles H H, for the admission and retention of the pin F, and the stud I, substantially as described.
