SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,901, dated March 19, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMIL J AHR, Secretary at the German Government Board of Health of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented anew and useful Improved Inhaling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an apparatus for conveying medicament into the human body by inhaling. In order to manage this, I use the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side View of such an apparatus; Fig. 2, a top view; Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section through the line 0;, Fig. 2; and Fig. etis a horizontal crosssection of the same.

In order to convey evaporated medicament into the human body by inhaling, and to deposit the same therein, it must be mixed with air of a temperature higher than that of the human body-namely, over 37 centigrade. The air must be completely saturated with steam and so inhaled.

The apparatus consists of a round or oval boiler, a, in which is placed the round or oval boiler 19, and so formed that it stands at a certain distance from the side walls of the boiler a. The space between the two boilers a and b is closed at the top, but can be filled with water through a in the top and run off at the cock a The water is warmed to a temperature of 50 centigrade by means of the gas burner c or other suitable way from under the boiler a. Between the bottom of the inner boiler, I), and the boiler a is a bent tube or pipe, (Z, placed, the one end of which passes out through the boiler a into the air at d, while the other end is led into the boiler b at (P. Opposite the opening (Z is a branch, b led into the side of the boiler l). The boiler b has a hinged cover or lid. In order that the thermometer f should register correctly, there is a small fly in the boiler b, which is driven by clock-work on the cover, Figs. 1 and 2, which brings the air in contact with the bulb of the thermometer f The working of the apparatus is as follows: On the branches a b is fastened an indiarubber tube, h, the free end of which the patient places to his mouth. The patient draws at each breath aportion of the air in from he boiler b, which is replaced by dried air from the spiral tube (Z,which enters at d from outside and escapes at (Z into the boiler I), while the two sprays work continually, and thus keep the entering air moist with steam and charged with the medicament. The air entering the tube (1 can be passed through a holder, 7t, containing chloride of calcium when it is desirable or necessary to filter it from its moisture and warmth and to clear it. In the case that only gaseous medicament is used, then only is steam added to the same in the boiler b by the spray-pipes e e.
