Description

UNITED STATES MINA SEBILLE, OF
PATENT QEEICE.
NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,964, dated September 15, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MINA SEBILLE, ofthe city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Corsets for Ladies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making` part Ot' this specitication, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view ot' my improved corset, and Fig. 2 represents the various patterns employed in cutting out the material for said corsets.
Similar letters denote the same parts.
Corsets have heretofore been formed by cutting out tlat woven material into the proper shape and introducing` tapering` gores at the top and bottom parts.
rl`he nature of my said invention consists in pecu1iarly-shaped hip-pieces, formed otl two or more thicknesses of woven fabric quilted together and introduced in such a manner in the corset that the said hippieces accommo date themselves to the shape of the person more easily than those corsets heretofore made, because the hip itself is not contined by the corset, but is free to move in walking or changing position of the body, and these hip-pieces of the corsets make the skirts set more gracefully, and sustain the weight of such skirts more comfortably on the person than in the corsets hezetofore made. I also introduce quilted bosom-gores in a peculiar manner that renders the corsets more comfortable at this part.
In the drawings, a a are the front pieces, cut out as indicated in Fig. 2. b b are the back pieces. c c are the bosom-gores, and d d are the hip-pieces, the shapes of which are all illustrated in Fig. 2. The gores c c and hippieces d d are to be'formed of two or more thicknesses. I prefer and use two thicknesses with a sheet ot' wadding between. These parts are to be united by-quiltingor stitching', as indicated, and then introduced at the respective parts Ot' a and b and united therein by stitching. rIhe length of the hip-piece around the side l 2 3 is to be greater than that of the corresponding portions, 4 5 6, of a and b, in order that it may be slightly fulled or gathered as introduced, which mode has the eii'ect ot' causing the hip-piece to set out from the corset as a curved segment, and in use this sets above and around the hip, allowing` ample room for the hip, and making theskirts set out handsomely. The bosom-gores c care introduced as shown, and have the ettect of setting out the corset at this point, and l introduce a stiening of whalebone or similar material at the tongue 7, between the bosomgores c c.
The corset is to be provided with bones or stiftening-ribs of whalebone or similar material, as usual, and is to be made to lace and clasp, as represented.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Thehip-pieces dd, quilted and introduced in thelower portions Ot' the sides of the corset below and between the parts c and b, in the manner and for the purposes specified.
2. The quilted bosom-gores c c, introduced in the front piece, c, ot the corset with the tongue 7 between them, as set forth.
ln witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 25th day of July, 1863.
MINA SEBILLE.
