PAINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,917, dated March 5, 1889. Application filed June 4, 1888. Serial No. 276,039. (No specimensf) 1"0 (LIZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Isnam. 'loivksnun, a resident of Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paints; and I do hereby declare the following to be awhat thicker.
When the paint has dried, it will be found perfectly ii'npcrvious to Water and ashard as stone.
When the last coat has been applied and before it dries, it. is preferable that line sand full, clear, and exact description of the inventiou, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ilertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in paints; and it consists in the peculiar com pound hereinafter described and claimed.
I first prepare a vehicle as follows: To one should be sifted on it.
For ordinary purposes two coats of my improved paint will be suiiicient; but-for unusually-exposed situations three coats should be applied.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise proportions of th e ingredients as l'iereinbefore described, as it is evident that the same may gallon of strong milk of lime (made from fresh caustic lime) one-half pound of powdered alum is added. I then add one gallon of linseed-oil and one-half pound of litharge. These ingredients, on beingwell stirred, readily unite and make a thick emulsion. \Vhen ready to use the paint, I stir into the vehicle thus prepared 1 two pounds of metallic brown, two pounds of dry cement. and two pounds of line dry sand, a sul'iicient quantity of these materials being stirred into the vehicle to make a good thick paint: but care must be taken not to mix these ingredients with the vehicle until the paint is to be used.
After the priming coat of my improved compound has been applied the same is permitted to dry. The second coat is then applied,
the paint being the same as before, but some-
