ANIMAL RELEASING DEVIOE.

ALONZO R. BRANN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ANlMAL-RELEASING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,578, dated February 26, 1889. Application filed Jul 23, 1888. Serial No. 280,854. (No model-l To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO R. BRANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and. county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Animal-Releasing Device, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters referring thereto. I
Figure l is a front elevation otmy improved releasing device; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a sectional view of the same cut vertically through the center. Fig. a is a perspective elevation showing the horse in the stall with the halter released and jets of water being projected upon it from a pipe arranged in the stall.
A represents the attaching-plate or bedplate of the device.
B represents the guide'catch box, C the catch-bolt, and. G the receiving-notch for the tongue G. The eye C is for attaching the operating-wire.
D represents the releasing -wire; E, the screws for attaching the device to the wall; F, the hin ge-bracket for pivotin g the lock-tongue.
G represents the lock-1 ongue.
H represents the pivot or hinge for the locktongue.
I represents the halter; .I, the watenpipes; K, the watenj ets.
'L represents the thumb-piece for raising the catch-bolt; M, the slot for the thumb-piece I, to operate through; N, the guide-groove for the catch-bolt C to operate in.
0 represents the halter-rings; l, the stallpartitions; Q,1he upper floor, and R the lower floor.
The following is the mnstruction of the device:
I form the bedplate A, the guide-catchbox l3, and the hinge-bracket F of one piece of casting. I hinge the lock-tongue G at H, so as to open out freely when the bolt U is raised to release the same. I form a square guidegroove, N, to receive the bolt (1, which conforms to the same in form and. smoothly finished to operate in the said groove. To the catclrbolt C, I attach the thumb-piece L, for which I have provided the slot )I. I form the eye C upon the top of the bolt 0 to attach the operating-wire, which is designed to connect with a handle or pull at any desired point, from which any required number of releasing devices may be operated at one time. I form the mortise or receiving-notch C to allow the end of the tongue G to pass into its seat. I form the lower or catch end of the bolt 0 with a beveled or rounded bearing to receive the contact with the tongue G, which forces it to rise up, as shown. I form the upper end of the tongue G with a reverse bevel or round bearing to adapt it to operating the bolt C, as shown.
I have shown a flat be jl-plate with screws for attaching it to the wall of the stall; but I generally construct the same to conform to the place where it is required to be attached.
The following is the operation of my improved release for horses: I attach any suitable wire, D, to the eye (1' of the catch-bolt C and carry it over suitable training-pulleys or guide sheaves to any required point best adapted to the operation of the same in case of fire. To such point- I converge the wires from all the releasing devices and attach them all to one lever or other handle best adapted to operate the same. As one mode of driving the horses from the stalls when the halters are dropped by the releasing devices, I have shown pipes attached in the stalls with perforations emitting jets to strike in the faces of the horses, by which the horses are at once driven from the stalls. These jets are connected by pipes leading from a single pipe, which is located so as to allow the turning on of the water at a convenient point in case of fire. In hitching a horse thebol't G is raised by the thumb-piece L, and the tongue G is opened out and the halter-ring is placed. upon the same. The tongue G is then brough up, and the beveled end, coming in contac with the beveled end of the bolt 0, forces the same up, and the tongue G, passing back, lows the bolt G to drop down, thuslocking the same in place.
In case of a fire the person discovering the same goes immediately to the lever or pull by which the connecting-wires are operated and releases all of the halter-rings. He then immediately turns on the water in the pipe connecting with the jet-pipes in the stalls, and the horses, being thus suddenly struck in the front, jump back out of the stalls.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a horse-releasing device, the combination, with the attaching-plate having a guidecatch box formed thereon and recessed at its lower end, of a catch-bolt arranged vertically in the said box and having its lower end bev- 5 eled, and a tongue pivoted to the attachingplate and having its free end beveled, so that it may engage the beveled end of the catchbolt and lift the same, so as to be locked thereby, substantially as specified.
2. The C-OlIlblTlfitlOlhWlth the attaching-plate having the guidecaich box formed thereon 5 near its upper end, and a hinge-bracket formed near its lower end, of the tongue to receive a i halter-ring pivoted to the said bracket, and
having its opposite end beveled, as shown, the said box having its lower end recessed for the entrance of the beveled end of the tongue, and also having a vertical slot in one of its side walls, and the catch-bolt having its lower end beveled, and also having a thnmb-piece passing through the slot of the box, substantially 25 as specified.
