AUTOMATIC RELEAE?E FOR TIE-ROPES.
memes.
Application filed March 11, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, PEDER HAUGAARD, a citizen of Denmark, residing at Luverne, in the county of Steele and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Automatic Releases for Tie-Ropes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for automatically releasing fire department, fire patrol, and police patrol horses upon the sounding of an alarm; the object being to provide a releaser that can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost, having few parts liable to get out of order, and that will operate with absolute certainty.
A further object is to provide such a device which is capable of being installed in private stables so as in case of fire, one exterior to the barn may so manipulate the device as to release the horses from their stables without entering upon the premises.
Having these and other objects of general design and utility in view, I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanylng drawings, 1n wh1ch:
F gure 1 1s a front elevation of a tie rlng at the end of a hitching strap shown in connection or operative engagement with my improved form of releaser; Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof; Fig. 3 is an elevation taken on line 38 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a centrally vertical section taken on line 14 of Fig. 1, the bolt being shown in retracted position.
Similar reference characters refer respectively to similar parts throughout the several views.
My device comprises, primarily a stud 10 adapted to be secured to the facing on tie rail 11 of the stable, the upper edge of said stud being inclined and adapted to receive the tie ring 12 of the halter strap. A spring-actuated plunger 13 journaled in a bearing 14% adjacent the top of said stud 10 having an aperture 15 in the end thereof is adapted to conform to the periphery of said ring 12, when in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and to securely lock said ring Specification of Letters Patent.

upon the stud, and thus secure it to the stable or manger. A vertically reciprocable lever 16 journaled in bearings 17 on the upper edge of the member 11, is up ended at 18, engaging a horizontally disposed rod 19; said plate 16 has a lateral extension 16' adapted to extend over the path of reciprocation of the plunger 13 and to hold it down against the tension of the spring 20 until re leased by the horizontal movement of the rod 19.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a halter fastener which is simple and inexpensive in construction, possessing great strength and durability and while it is adapted to save much time in releasing animals, it is also capable of engaging a halter strap or rope which may be readily unfastened, even though the same .should be under tension by reason of the animal pulling backward or becoming entangled in it. When the devices are arranged in a series, they may also be operated independently of one another, as the arm 18 may be slidably mounted on the shaft 19 and a lug 21 integral with the shaft mounted at the left of said arm 18 as shown in Fig. 1, whereby upon the drawing of the rod in position as shown by the arrow, the entire series may be thrown open, or by manually drawing the member 16 in each respective case, the locks may be independently opened.
From the foregoing it will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that numerous modifications and refinements thereof are possible without materially departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claim.
What is claimed is In an automatic release for tie rope comprising a stud projecting from the face of the tie-beam, a spring actuated plunger adapted to engage said stud and normally retain the tie ring of the halter strap thereon, a reciprocable lever mounted on said tie-beam adapted to hold said plunger in engagement with said stud and said tie ring, and means for reciprocating said last In testimony that I claim the foregoing as mentioned lever, said means comprlsing an my own I have hereto aifixed my signature lntegral arm extending from sald lever, a 1n the presence of two subscriblng wltnesses. 10
