UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN T. BUZBY AND ALFRED I'I. SNYDER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA;
' SAID BUZBY ASSIGN OR TO SAID SNYDER.
AUTOMATIC FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,811, dated February "19, 1889. Application filed May 4, 1838. Serial No. 272,770. (No model.)
. To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN T. BUzBY and ALFRED II. SNYDER, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fans; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of our improved attachment for soda and other drinking fountains. Fig. 2 is a front sectional View of the same. Figs. 3 and i are side views of modifications.
This invention is an improved attachment for drinking-fountains such as are commonly known as soda-fountains, and its object is to provide fanning devices which may be driven by the water-j et commonly seen in such fountains.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of the devices for driving the fans which are hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the upper portion of the casing of an ordinary soda or drinking fountain, which is provided with a glass dome, B, and a jet-tube, 0, from which water is injected into the dome, as usual.
e mount within dome B a small waterwheel in such manner that its blades will be struck by the jet of water from tube 0, and the wheel thereby rotated. This wheel may be made ornamental and brightly colored to attract attention when revolving, and we utilize the power of this wheel by suitable gearing or connections to actuate a shaft or shafts which carry upon their outer extremities cards, fans, or brushes, which, when the shafts are actuated, will be rotated or vibrated. and at tract attention, and which willalso cause a circulation of air and a draft around the fountain. The fans, brushes, or cards when in motion will serve also to drive away flies. The moving devices, while being conspicuous advertisements, can thus be utllized to 111- crease the comfort and attractiveness of the Parallel with but below of shaft F are attached pieces H H, to which are secured the fans, brushes, or advertisingcards I I, which, when rotated, create a current of air, and which revolve close to the draw oif faucet, as shown. Shaft F is driven from shaft (1 by suitable connections, preferably by means of sprocket-chain J and sprocketwheels j j on said shafts, as shown.
In Fig. 3 the horizontal revolving wheel K is mounted upon a vertical revoluble shaft,
7r havin no or bearin s in a on L and o 3 b b J 7 bracket l, as shown, and M M are two short horizontal shafts journaled in the base-rim G of dome B and in bearings formed in the vertical legs of bracket Z outside said rim, as shown.
N N are bevel-gears on the inner ends of said shafts engaging asimilar gear, 11, of shaft 70, by which motion is imparted from the wheel K to fans or brushes 011 the outer ends of shafts M M.
Instead of revolving the fan-shafts the wheel-shaft may be provided with a crankarm, 0, connected by a link or pitman, 0, to a crank, P, on the fan shaft or shafts, so that the latter will be vibrated instead of rotated 8 5 from the fan-shaft, and the fans or other devices will be swung to and fro instead of being revolved.
The water-wheel, while utilizing the force of the water injected from tube C, disseminates 0 the water as it is dashed against the blades,
increasing the attractiveness of the device.
If desired, small advertising-cards may be attached to the wheel'shaft within the dome when it is not desired to use the fans. thus be seen that the principal feature in our invention is the arrangement of fan devices on a soda-fountain and the utilization of the It will jet of water (which as now used serves no practical end) to actuate the same.
Having described our invention, we claim 1. In a dispensing-fountain provided with a glass dome and a water-j et therein, the combination of a water-wheel in said dome driven by said j et, its shaft and supporting-brackets, with the horizontal shaft journaled in fixed bearings below said dome and wheel and extending outside the same, the fans on the ends of said shaft, and the mechanism, substantially as described, whereby motion is imparted from said water-Wheel shaft to the fan-bearing shaft, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
- 2. The combination of the casing A, the dome B and its supporting-rim G, and. the
water-j et and water-wheel D, its shaft (Z, and brackets E, supporting the same, arranged within dome B, with the horizontal shaft F passing through rim G and below dome B, the fans on the ends of v said shaft, and the gearing and connections between shafts d and F within dome B, all constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
