MARTIN LOOHNEB, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPRQVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,293, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MARTIN LOGHNER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Fan; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan or top view of the same, the line 00 m, Fig. 1, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a water-wheel with a fan and a bedstead, the fan beng mounted adjustably on the shaft of the, water-wheel, or on a prolongation of said shaft which extends over the bedstead in a longitudi nal direction in such a manner that, by admitting water to the wheel, a rapid revolving motion is imparted to the fan; and by adjusting the fan on its shaft the current of air created by the fan can be thrown upon any part of the bed or of the person occupying the same.
In the drawing, A designates a bedstead, with which is combined a frame, B, that forms the bearing forashaft, O. This shaft extends through a box or flume, D, which incloses a water-wheel, E, of any suitable construction, and which connects, by means of a pipe, F, with a hydrant, or with a reservoir containing a supply of water, and situated at such an elevation that when said pipe is opened the water will rush down upon the wheel E with sufficient force to impart to the same a rapid revolving motion. A stop-cock, it, serves to open and close the pipe F. The shaft (J extends over the bedstead in a longitudinal direction, and on it is mounted a fan-blower, G, of any suitable construction, in such a manner that it can be adjusted on the shaft over any portionof the bedstead. The wings or buckets of the fan-blower ought to be so constructed that the current of air produced by the same is thrown downward. If desired, the shaft 0 may be made in sections, which can be readily connected by suitable couplings, or disconnected when it is desired to remove a portion of the shaft. From the flume D extends a pipe, H, to the sink or sewer, to carry off the tail-water. By this arrangement a small supply of water is sufficient to impart to the fan-blower G a rapid revolving motion, and by adjusting the fan in the proper position over the bedstead a current of air will be produced, which will agreeably cool the person occupying the bedstead and which will efi'ectually drive ofl' mosquitos and flies.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fan-wheel Gr, shaft 0, and water-wheel E, arranged to operate in connection with the flume D, supply-pipe F, and exit-pipe or opening H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed by me this 15th day of September, 1871.
