OYSTBR DBBDGE WINDLASS.
Patented Feb. 19, 1889.
#lm/ENT 12H- trice.,
OYSTERQDRED GE". WINDLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,167', dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed April 4, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HENRY LAWSON, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Oyster Dredge \Vindlasses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention, in common with others of its class, is to prevent accidents from the rotation of the cranks or handles of the windlass in a reverse direction, owing to Y the dredge attached to the winding-rope being caught by a rock or other obstruction durin the dredging operation, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, lligure I is a side elevation of the improved windlass with a portion of the stand removed. Fig. II is an end view of Fig. I. Fig. Ill, IV, and V are details of tl1ein vention. Fig. VI is a sectional view of a part of the invention and corresponds with Fig. IV, except that the section-line is at a right angle with reference to that of the said ligure.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
In the said drawings, A is the stand of the windlass, an d B the barrel on which the dredgerope (not shown) is wound. The barrel is placed loosely on the shafta, which is supported in boxes l) l), forming parts of the stand A.
C is a clutch rigidly attached to the shaft a and adapted to engage with projections or lugs c on one face of the barrel.
D is a ratchet-wheel having flanges d and a hub, c. t' For which latter device see Figs. Il and IV.) This ratchet-wheel has a spiral or inclined groovehf, extending radially from the central hole ir. which the shaft-a. is inserted, (see particularl v Fig. IV and the said shaft has a spiral or inclined feather, f ,welded to the shaft, which rests in the groove f.
E is a plate with a central hole, in which the hub e of the flanged ratchet-wheel is adapted to turn loosely. This plato E, whose office is to sustain the ratchet-disk D independently of the shaft a, is attached to the frame A by means of two bolts, lz.
G G are pawls placed over the bolts 7L and rest on the ratchet-teeth of the ratchet-disk Serial No. 269,594. (No model.)
D. By means of this arrangement the bolts h have two uses, and the number of parts of the windlass is reduced. To prevent the pawls from moving endwise of the bolts 71, the said bolts are provided with collars 1', as shown in Fig. I.
Supposing that the various parts of the invention occupy the relative positions shown in the drawings, a turn of the handles or cranks (not shown) in the direction of the arrow, and which is the direction taken in winding in the dredged-ope, the feather gis moved spirally in the groove f i n the ratchet-disk. The said shaft carrying the clutch C is thus brought into engagement with the lugs c on the face of the barrel B and that device 'placed in rotation.. Should the dredge come in contact and be stopped by a rock or other obstruction, the direction of the barrel is reversed; but before any dangerous reversed revolution of the handles or cranks takes place the shaft is carried out and with it the clutcl1,which is thus disengaged from the lugs c by the feather moving in the groove in the disk D, which is held from turning in a backward direction by means of the pawls G.
In order to avoid. any movement of the bar rel longitudinally of the shaft, I attach lo the frame A the bracket I, which extends to near the face of the barrel.
I claim as my invention- In an oyster-dredge windlass, the combination of the frame A, sliding shaft a, having the feather g, barrel B, placed loosely on the shaft a and provided with lugs c on 011e of its faces, clutch C, secured to the said sliding shaft, ratchet-disk D, iittedwith flanges d and provided with the hub c and having the inclined groove f, plate E, with a central hole in which the hub of the ratchet-disk is supported and held to the said frame by means of the bolts 7i, and pawls G, hinged to the said bolts and adapted to rest on the periphery of the said ratchet-disk, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY LAIVSON.
